Wonderful Entertainment for the Preschool and Kindergarten Crowd
If my five year old were writing this review then Junie B would have five stars. She finds it incredibly entertaining and has giggle-fits over Junie's antics. Ms. Park's writing is not on par with other children's classics (like Beverly Cleary or George Selden or E. L. Konisburg), which is why I've only given it four stars. In comparison to classics, Park's writing is a bit formulaic, the characters are flatter and more stereotypical, and the stories lack depth, but what they lack they fully make up for in comedy.Junie B is such a fun character. Barbara Park must enjoy writing her and I think that is conveyed in the stories. Junie's grammar is atrocious and I've seen several reviews where parents are upset by this. Folks, have no fear, your kiddos are much smarter than you give them credit for. If you're worried, simply laugh with your child about how Junie phrases things.I like that Barbara Park does not shy away from hitting, spitting, and references to shows that Junie has peeked at that are age-inappropriate (for example "Attack of the Killer Ponies"). All of it is mild, but such a relief in a literary world that has been so dulled-down as to not give our kids any bad ideas, we've created worlds that just don't resemble reality. Junie B's world is hyperbolic, but is more real to me--full of mistakes, misunderstandings, some good and bad teaching, and some good and bad parenting--that I think it's a pleasure for me to read as an adult. I believe children's entertainment should be just that. Entertaining. Not a constant barrage of pseudo educational material. There are plenty of lessons to be learned in fiction that is not educational. Children are fully capable of understanding why Junie's mistakes are mistakes rather than things to be emulated. Even more important is their appreciation of an author who understands the absurdities of the adult world as seen through children's eyes.

Fun to read with kids
I bought these to read with my grandkids because I remembered reading them to their parents a long time ago.
