Works great
I tested this when I got it and all was well. I hooked two 5v DC motors up to it and got some Arduino code and had fun making the motors do different things.I pulled the yellow jumper so I could power the Arduino separately from this motor driver. To power this driver I had an AC-DC converter that goes to an electronic device I no longer use, it outputs 12 V DC which was plenty for the motors I was playing with (I cut the connector off the converter and used solder on the stranded wire to make strong connectors I could push into the PWR_IN port on the card)Pay attention to the 600 mA max draw, I figured a couple of steps from a 1.6 A stepper motor wouldn't hurt anything to make sure some new steppers I bought worked. Even just a couple of steps (literally milliseconds) got the chips on this card very hot! The card survived just fine though, but, umm, don't do that. (search Amazon for L298N if you want to test steppers up to 2A)So it works great and even survived some abuse at a great price.

Only works for Arduino?
I was only able to get this motor shield working once I paired it up with an arduino uno. It was pretty easy after that to make it work to drive 4 solenoid valves. I wanted to use it with another brand of microcontroller but was unable to which is why I am taking one star off. Otherwise it has been pretty useful, making it a 4/5 stars for me.

Good value
Used this product to build a line tracing robot for my mechatronics class and it worked perfectly. Just wish it came with an instruction sheet that verified which inputs could be programmed for various types of motors. However found it pretty easily on Google so it wasn't that big of a deal.

Bad quality IC chips. The rest is great.
Both L293D ICs did not work. I did not exceed the voltage. I switched motors to M1 M2 M3 & M4 and changed the code to match each time. I also used V1 of the AF library to match this version of the shield. I then pulled each IC out of its socket to perform a basic test on it with code that I have previously successfully used on L293D chips. They forsure do not work, the tips or headers of the ICs are white with oxidation and are very pliable. I have used good quality L293Ds before and they had much stronger headers. I have purchased from this seller before and have gotten very reliable parts I have been using for months now. I think the ICs they used on this batch of boards are just no good. the actual shield is in good condition and luckily I can replace the chips because they are detachable. But overall, I spent way too much time debugging an item that should have come in working condition. I hope they send me undamaged ICs, or just give me my money back. Sorry for the bad review. I hate doing that to people, but I did not get an item that performs like it's supposed to :((

Did not work
It only turn on if you connect power to it with batteries but did not turn on if connected with the Arduino when trying to program it. The whole purpose is for it to connect to the Arduino and get programmed. Bad Product will not buy again.
