Beautiful rich color and gloss
So far this product has been great. Our contractor has always used another varnish that recently got discontinued, sending me on a lengthy research project to find a good replacement. I finally decided on this Rustoleum spar varnish as we are really after the marine high gloss and superior water protection for our outside cedar soffits and porch railings. We received on time, and all cans were sealed and intact. No leaks. Our contractor used the first can and came to find me - he said "yes! this is a good one, thank you for finding it!".The first coat goes on well (although that first one soaks in a lot so be prepared to use a lot of product), seals the wood beautifully and brings out a gorgeous color. The subsequent coats take less product and add more color, depth, richness and then build to the high gloss finish as you add more coats. We thinned the first coat to 75% varnish 25% mineral spirits, the second coat to 90% varnish and 10% mineral spirits, and our third and beyond coats are full varnish. It's not cheap, but it's less than it's highly ranked competitors and it works really well.

QUALITY FINISH
I purchased this varnish to seal my fence gate which leads from the back of my pool property to a Park behind my residence. I replaced my rear property fence and had stained everything before install the fence and purchased gate kit that allowed me to install quality cedar boards to build the gate. I have since put two coats of this varnish on both sides of the gate and the appearance is exceptional ands protected the wood. It's been three years since being sealed and has stood up to three winters with no touch up required. Having had a pool with fencing for over forty years I can attest tothe quality and durability of this product which I highly recommend especially at $19.99 in the USA. The same product in Canada and sold by Amazon is $56.99 .It certainly looks like Amazon likes to inflate certain items they resell to its Canadian market that's why I always compare and buy in USA for shipment to our US location.

Inexpensive alternative with good results
I have been using Epifanes varnish on my last 2 boats and always liked the results but it's getting very expensive now. Rusoleum is a dependable brand and like others, I like the the Rustoleum marine paints....so I gave this varnish a try. It's thinner than Epifanes but I usually thin Epifanes for the first few coats. I'm using this varnish on my boats teak. I'm finding it to have the typical ambering/darkening effect as any oil based varnish or urethane. It takes about 8 hours to dry to the touch ( in ideal dry low humidity conditions) and needs a bit longer before applying the additional coats. Note: if you wait 12 hours before applying additional coats, you must sand between coats...I sand between coats (400 grit) no matter what all the time. If you want a thick layer high build varnish and something that won't amber, yellow or darken your wood....this is not for you. Having used multiple brands of urethanes and varnishes over the years I can say this is a good finish with lots of shine as advertised (gloss)

Almost chickened out
I do not know about durability long term but very happy with my results. I did my deck railings and banister. This is fool proof. It is easy application and I did not dilute it. I was afraid of the dry time but it dried to touch in a few hours and felt cured by next day. It is tough finish seems to waterproof and lovely! It is a semi gloss and really put the life back in my wood. Preparation was the most work. I scrubbed with soap and water/rinsed and allowed to dry in high heat for a day. It has been very hot in Florida. Then lightly sanded and wiped with a damp cloth diaper (no lint). Applied my first coat in one direction with brush and allowed to dry 24 hours and will lightly sand for second coat. Honestly the first coat turned out so good I am wondering if I need the second but will do it for long term durability. I am so glad I bit the bullet with prep and didn't just spray T water seal again. I am very happy with my results. If it last two years I am sold.
