Trying to learn calligraphy & this book is exactly what I was looking for!

“Modern calligraphy” is observed everywhere and I wanted the skill to create it. Thus began an exhaustive search for a book that would help me learn this specific style with a pointed pen (not markers). Nothing. Well, that’s because this book didn’t exist in May 2019!!! It was just released in October!And what an amazing book it is!First of all, it is beautiful: the cover, layout, design, photos, hard cover. The feel of the paper…and of course, the exemplars (the letters you want to imitate)!!! But I get ahead of myself.The table of contents is gorgeous (in addition to the headings, Ms. Thorpe gives a written example of the chapter) and so well-laid out. This book is COMPLETE.From methods of effective practice, guide to supplies, warm-up exercises/drills to actual strokes, to different kinds of layouts (i.e., not just linear writing!), flourishes (complete with drills!), grids/guides and additional resources. She gives examples with explanations, helpful hints and tips. Her descriptions help with the reader’s understanding.Ms. Thorpe goes into not only the basic “modern” alphabet, but then extrapolates (with exemplars!) with five complete alphabets. And she doesn’t just give you the alphabet to try; with each of one of these, she lists suggested nibs for execution success! She goes the extra mile.The book is wire bound so it can open flat so you can not only photocopy the guides/grids but also can lay it open to inspire while practicing.I’m not so sure that this book is for the rank beginner. Perhaps her other book “Modern Calligraphy” would help to that end.I forgot to mention that it’s so affordable. Under $20 on Amazon Prime for all of this information (and beauty!) So worth it!I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to step into the world of modern calligraphy. I love it…can’t stop hugging it. Pathetic…

This book is as beautiful as it is educational. The author really breaks down the basics of calligraphy writing in way that I can follow. Lots of gorgeous examples and exercises. My only gripe is the book arrived slightly damaged. Don't know if it came from Amazon damaged or it happened while being shipped. The only reason it's not 5 stars.

This is a masterclass and a complete visual (and tactile??) feast. Ms. Thorpe has provided the reader/bearer of this book with the keys to the kingdom- offering tremendous and very detailed insight as to her professional strategies and methods for designing layout, envelope addressing, monograms and a dozen other things I had never dared dream of trying before.In addition to every secret or bit of advice you might ever have wanted to ask of a professional calligrapher, she supplies us with a list of her recommended supplies and nibs (which honestly to me is worth the price in and of itself as I have wasted time and money and patience trying to hunt in the wild), mechanics, warm ups and an array of practice areas, as well as five gorgeous full modern calligraphy alphabets of her design- which are all brilliantly laid out in a RING-BOUND book so that you can work alongside it without having to set your paper on one side of the book.Everyone I know who can hold a pen will get this for Christmas this year from me, because even if you don't fancy yourself a calligrapher, having one beautiful book that holds the secrets and techniques of such a hard-earned skill is a worthy gift and an invaluable resource.

I bought the Kindle book for $2.99 and was concerned it may not be laid out well. The Kindle book came in perfect condition and is totally usable.If you've never done Calligraphy, this is not a starter book. If you've been through Copper Plate Calligraphy for a while and hopefully at least completed one book in it, then you can take these alphabets in this book and run.If you're a beginner, you really need a teaching Calligraphy book. I've been doing calligraphy for a year or so, so I'd call my myself just barely intermediate. Still, I've been searching for books that will take me past the basic stuff, and this one does just that. If you're an advanced level, I'd say this book is for you too. There are so many examples of different letters and styles that I can imagine using this as a reference for years to come! I'm also obsessed with all the different flourishes Molly shows! If you have already been doing calligraphy for a while and are looking to take your skills to the next level, this book is for you!

Molly Suber Thorpe really knows her stuff. I took the time to read the opening pages, in which she recommends products, etc. and have benefited from her tips. The lettering guides are spot-on. I already had some experience, but I learned more from using the book. Highly recommended.

I am in lovely with this book. I now own all of the incredibly talented Molly Suber Thorpe’s books. I am not disappointed in my last purchase. The photos are amazing with realistic prompts which I definitely feel will improve anyone’s calligraphy skills. The book offers so much more than just different styles of calligraphy, it also shows you suggested nibs, inks and paper to use. The book includes lovely photos and illustrations and a resources section which I think is great. I would highly recommend this book to anyone (beginner or advanced) to up their skills.

Sold as new, but was definitely used. Edges of cover banged up and some bits of food or something stuck to the front and back covers.Aside from the seller's misrepresentation of the condition, the book looks great and is exactly what I expected. For anyone who wants to see what it contains, the author has a video all about it on her website. I highly recommend checking it out if you're wondering whether this book is for you.

I only received this today and am flicking through and am falling in love with it. I have bought a ton of books over the years Ive tried to get a handle on modern calligraphy. Most have been ok, a couple good, and two excellent. This is the next level of excellent. So many examples of how to change it up, example of different grids in different shapes. tons and tons of different alphabets to get inspiration from. I think this will be the last book I will ever need to buy. Yes it is expensive, I was treating myself, but it is worth it. Its ring bound so will open flat. I dont understand why there isnt more description in the book when looking at it. I’ve tken a couple of photos of the contents pages as I think that gives an idea of just how wonderfully comprehensive it is. If you’ve been doing calligraphy for a while and are not sure what to do next, this is so the book for you. 10 out of 10.
