Works as advertised, with a little effort
I bought the automatic bowl from Chewy.com, and the AC adapter from Amazon. The system is easy to set up however it’s pretty obvious that it’s flimsy and prone to breakage if you’re not careful. The IR chip is not properly sealed due to the shape of the plastic housing so you have to make sure that the gasket ring is placed correctly. I wasn’t careful at first and my cat dipped his in his water bowl every time he took a drink and it stopped working. I dried it out and fixed it and I’ve had no problems since.Been using this for about a month now. The noise of the bowl opening and closing alarmed him at first, but once he realized the noise meant food, he got over it. Not sure what the battery life (3 D batteries, not incl) of the main unit is because I switched to the AC adapter right away. The battery in the collar chip (that came with it) died within a week. Buy your own coin cell batteries!

Do not waste your money
I bought one of these pet bowls despite the warnings in the reviews. I thought I am a smart techy person, I can make it work. After one week of the first one working when I tested, and I was letting pet No. 1 get used to it, I bought a second one. The second week the tag for the first one quit working. I replaced the battery in the tag, it never worked again. The tag for the second one worked one time and never worked again. I replace the batteries in both tags again, the first one worked a couple times and quit. I ordered two new tags, to try one more time. They arrived today, and both of them do not work. I tried different batteries in each. I know I am putting them together correctly because the first bowl worked that first week. These are incredibly poorly made for the money. I later saw there is a blue tooth version available, these are the infrared versions. I am not going to spend more than a hundred dollars again to find out.

Great Idea but Needs Improving
I've had the bowls and tags since about May 2014, first one cat and on a second a few months later. The biggest problem I've so far is with the tags. First I had the tag dangling from the collar with very little problems on the one cat - it made it through two battery changes no problem. Then one day the first tag quit working. After a couple times of replacing the tags and also getting a second bowl and tag for another cat, I finally got smarter and ended up super gluing a flat-backed safety pin on the back side of the transmitter and then pinned it on the collar for a cheap and easy solution that would ensure the tag wouldn't come off easily or dangle in the water bowl. This solution worked great for about a month and half but then the tags slowly stopped working. I tried replacing the batteries with no success but also didn't see any condensation or gunk built up on the hardware like I had when I opened them up in the past. The bowls will open when I push the button on the back and with new tags so I'm guessing the tags just don't have a very long life expectancy even without water damage which is rather disappointing since they're $10 each. I've gone through at least 6 tags so far and will still probably continue to buy them because I haven't found a better solution for selective feeding yet. When a more reliable option comes out, I will probably jump ship unless improvements are made to these tags.

Amazing product
I've got three cats and each of them have their own special bowl. Each bowl comes with a collar piece (Which has 9 different settings to match the bowl settings [You can have 9 separate bowls for 9 animals if you wanted to]) I've already had to replace the battery in one of the collar pieces after 2 weeks of owning them and have had to fixate the piece onto the cat's collar as two of them have lost theirs (Luckily we found them behind the couch).I would advise to get the AC adapters to go with the bowls..its easier to deal with and a lot less of a hassle -AND- you don't have to buy batteries for it...ever.Overall:PROS-Each cat has his/her own bowl and specific food amount or food type (Also good for medicine)-Can get an AC adapter to keep bowls on all the time-Tags on the collar work really goodCONS-One cat will sit a bit from the bowl and it will open, and another cat may try and intrude on his/her food-Collar tags need to be fastened through a loop AND over the collar to make sure it wont fly off-AC adapters are sold seperatlyStill 5/5 stars.

This is a great bowl for our use
This is a great bowl for our use. I have to keep my of my chubby dog's from my skinny dog's food as she will leave nothing left for him if I let him. She needs to be on a diet and I needed a way to keep her out of his food. This bowl keeps her from him food while letting him eat as his leasure. I was a little woied that the bowl would stay open too long after my skinny on left his bowl. This bowl closes at just the right time to prevent that. I also like the push button that opens and closes the bowl when I press it. It allows for simple refilling when needed.I would give this bowl 5 stars if it didn't have one problem. The bowls sensors are not sensitive enough. This bowl has multiple sensors that pick up the signal from the tag. It has 3 inside of the lid of the bowl and 1 in front of the bowl. Even with all of these sensors the tag has to be in just the right place for the sensors to pick it up.I tried for a week to get this bowl to work for us and this was my solution, put the tag on his color high enough so that his tag falls into his bowl when he eats. You may have to try multiple times before you can get this bowl to work for you. Also I would like to add that any 4.5V power supply will work with this bowl, just make sure the plug fits first. I got a 4.5V power that had multiple plugs so I would know that I would work. The wall power adapter is way too expensive.
