The Lives of the Desert Fathers: Historia Monachorum in Aegypto (Cistercian Studies No. 34) (Volume 34) Paperback – April 1, 1981

The writing is good and the subject matter is terrific. We get many profiles of early saintly lives and the many works of God in their lives.

This book is a wonderful compilation of Christian wisdom and inspiration. Any miracles it contains are not unbelievable but simply inspired happenings in these hermits' lives. I love the book and look forward to rereading it again and again. The desert fathers and mothers were so unusual. We could most certainly use their guidance today, and I would love to meet someone like them today.

I love the desert fathers stories which this has. The only reason for the 4 starts is because the font is very small.

The Introduction alone is well worth the price of this book and is a brilliant & concise overview of the circumstances & times the Desert Fathers found themselves in. It even explains why they considered fruit to be a feature of paradise! The actual "Lives" document is rather obscure, but the introduction makes it much more understandable, especially for non-scholarly readers.

This book contained so much wisdom and insight into how I should imitate Christ that it changed the way I live my life now. It gave me guidance and strength and I highly recommend it to all who don't just want to read but be inspired!

I have read 1/2 the book and so far it's a fantastic read!

The author sums up what the original manuscript says, using extensive direct quotes. Then the second half of the book provides the text in full, with no comments.Despiote the feeling of deja vu, this gives the reader a chance to judge the original by itself, following a modern dissection.

The book is so good it deserves a second part or a more extended version. I am very happy with it.
