Great Book about the Possible Futures of the Power Industry
Awesome book. Mr. Fox-Penner proves that he has a great understanding of the current industry and technology. He understands how things operate today and explores ways that might change in the future.

Great intro to smart grid topics. Already getting a little dated, but still a great read.

Grid power will actually triple - here's why
Lots of good information, however Mr. Fox-Penner overlooks two very major points which would change the whole focus of his book.First, electricity production only accounts for 30% of CO2 emissions. Heating accounts for 30% and vehicle emmissions account for another 30%. We're going to HAVE to transition all three loads to renewable energy -- or we're dead. Renewable energy (wind and solar) come in the form of electricity and that energy will all be exchanged on the grid. Therefore, power on the grid will eventually TRIPLE. Mr. Fox-Penner makes no mention of that.Second, transportation will eventually transition from petroleum to hydrogen-powered. Hydrogen will be generated by splitting water using electricity and this electricity will add 30% to the new grid load. Mr. Fox-Penner doesn't address this in the book.I hope these omissions make it into the next edition.
