The Rogvoc Hydraulic Tube Expander is a powerful tubing swaging tool. I was kind of surprised by the label on the well-built case because it said it was for aluminum tubing, whereas the Amazon listing primarily mentioned copper tubing and HVAC work which is its primary purpose, but it could be used on most softer metals. Then I realized that the material mentioned was related to the tool, not the material on which to be used. I’m sure with a little bit of practice I can make tight-fitting swaged joints. To test its capabilities, I used a short piece of 3/8” copper refrigeration tubing I had on hand. The tool readily expanded the tubing. In fact, because I expected to have to apply significant hand force, I slightly over-expanded the heavy-walled tubing. Since this type of joint would typically be brazed, it should still be strong. Most of the tubing-related work I do uses 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch copper tubing, but the kit includes expander heads (adapters) from 3/8 inch through 1-1/8 inches in 1/8-inch increments (seven heads). Each head screws easily onto the end of the handheld pump. After deburring the end of a piece of 3/8-inch tubing, the tip of the head fit easily into the tubing. Operation is very simple: select the appropriate head and screw it onto the pump, close the pump valve (labeled "WORK"), operate the handle, and open the valve (labeled "RESET"). Note the arrows on the control knob are oddly shaped, but like most valves, clockwise is closed and counterclockwise is open. The expander head is tightened inside the tubing with a few easy strokes of the pump handle. A few more strokes requiring slightly more force expands the tubing. Because I was expecting to need to use more force, I gave the tool another pump or two before stopping. When I tested the fit to the other end of my refrigeration tubing, it was looser than I expected. Thus, as mentioned, with a little practice and perhaps some trial fitting, quality swaged joints can be created. Over-expanding the tubing to make a swaged joint is likely to lead to some weakness in the finished joint. The hydraulic pump is nicely made and feels heavy-duty.
