N Scale Model Railroad That Grows: Step-By-Step Instructions for Building Your First N Scale Layout

Bought this when I was getting back to N Scale model railroading after a 30 year hiatus. It is an excellent book. Has many innovations that I never would have thought about and have not seen described elsewhere: like, making the benchwork out of foam core! Followed their directions and now have an extremely light weight, durable, layout. Another positive element is the title's theme: a model railroad that grows. The authors start with a simple layout with simple scenery, allowing the modeler to begin railroad operations very quickly. The book then moves through several phased projects, allowing railroad operations to become more complex without having to wait for the entire project to be completed before beginning to enjoy the fruits of your labor. It is not helpful on wiring the layout or converting locomotives for DCC operations, but those details are available elsewhere including very useful online forums. A great book for the beginner.

I had gotten this book for a friend that builds n scale. So I thought that it would be a good gift. When I received the book I looked through it and wow it’s amazing. I have always built modal cars and planes but I never paid to much attention to building train layouts. As I read this book I found myself wanting to build a train layout of my own. I highly recommend this book, and if you want something fun to do with your child that is not a video game or TV. Try modeling its cheap fun and teaches you so much.

If you've wanted to start a realistic-looking n-scale railroad layout (think beyond just setting up a loop to run around the Christmas tree), and aren't sure where to start or what it will involve, this is the perfect book. It's stuffed full of helpful pictures, detailed walkthroughs and examples of products to buy if you really really like the way they did a particular section.The book covers the development of layout, starting out with minimal scenery and a single loop. It then adds a service yard... and a downtown area... and so on. Before you spend dollar one on track, rolling stock or even a piece of lumber, buy and read this book.

Really rates four and one half stars, the missing half star because a small amount of out of date material recommended in construction.For the beginner who needs a hand-holding step by step guide to building a first layout, from basic to more complex, this book is the one to choose. Simplicity and use of common materials is stressed. I wish the authors would update this volume, for I would be first in line to buy it.

As a person who waited and waited to start a hobby that was always in the back of my mind, this book finally made it a reality. I bought this book on Amazon.com and it was the perfect book for me. The book provided a huge amount of information that guides the reader through the steps and procedures required to get a N-scale model railroad up and running. The book gives you lists of materials you will need, and then tells you how to use them. The wiring, track, and background information is all there and it is easy to understand and use. Buy this book and then get started. I did, and it is a blast.

RR book was easy to follow and use. helped to understand how the railroad system needs to be set-up for use.

Excellent for beginners. Instructions permit the average person to create their own idea of a railroad. The instructions can be modified to create any layout.

A very handy guide to building and developing a model railway in N scale. Not much jargon used and plenty of useful hints and pictures to get you started on the 'right track'.

this is a book I wished I had before I had started my model. it is the book I refer to for inspiration.
