This is the most glorious TV I have ever owned
I cannot believe how much I love this TV. As background, I bought a TLC from Amazon several months ago and hated it. Not only was it having issues working well with Google and Alexa, but I could never get the color right. It always looked off and meh. I returned it. I finally chose this one for Black Friday, and I cannot believe how much I love it. I have never owned a TV this beautiful in my life. The picture is glorious, it’s like being at the movies. Right out of the box, the picture was very good, excellent even. With some tweaks, it’s just perfect. I will say that reading the calibration suggestions online was pretty useless. It’s not like there’s that many settings, and what I found particularly nice was there were often three or four different options in each setting, each of which made the screen look better. (I opted for filmmaker mode, and just adjusted the brightness, color etc from there.) With the TLC I felt like every calibration option was subpar, nothing made the TV look better. I’m not a TV geek, so I can’t tell you about the blackness level. I CAN tell you that the color is outstanding, the clarity is outstanding, the brightness is outstanding, but it does get to be a little bright sometimes. Of all things, captions are too bright on Netflix. And while the TV itself lets you set the caption color to something less obnoxious, Netflix overrules, the TV caption settings, and only lets you do white or yellow, both of which are way too bright. Daylight scenes can be a bit much, light coming in through a window can be a bit too bright because it’s that bright of a TV. But that’s a small point. It’s simply an amazing tv. One word about the viewing angle, as I read a lot of TVs in this price range are terrible when viewed a little bit off to the side. I’m not noticing a decrease in viewing quality much at all, unlike with my TLC. So that’s a relief. I’m also enjoying the Google interface, seems to work fine, and plays well with YouTube TV, Prime video and Netflix. And it was super easy to set up. Following the instructions to put the stand on the TV was living hell, as there are picture-only instructions like IKEA! Just awful. And the TV is pretty heavy, so you’re gonna need somebody’s help putting it on the stand. But again, those are minor issues. This is the most beautiful TV I have ever owned, and the quality of the picture looks like those crazy pictures you see on display room floor, and know it’s never going to look like that at home. With this TV, it does. One final point, I’m really not understanding why this only has four out of five stars here. The professional reviewers love it (Tom’s, Rtings). It makes me wonder if some people are receiving a TV that substandard. Meaning, if with a few tweaks, this thing is not glorious, consider returning it for another one. I simply can’t express sufficiently in words how glorious this TV is. It was worth every penny (I got it for $890).

An amazing 85 inch TV at this (or almost any) price point
I ordered the 85 inch Hisense U8N TV, with the “free” placement and removal of boxing addition. Both exceeded expectations. On the TV, I had done a lot of research about a new 85 inch TV to replace my 2019 75 inch Samsung. Hisense’s 2024 U8N was pretty much at the top of the list for high-end quality at a reasonable (lower end?) price point. Right out of the box, its brightness and contrast were exceptional, and the built-in speakers were pretty darn good as well. (I did hook it up to an inexpensive 3.1.2 Hisense soundbar that does stuff such as Dolby Atmos, which is really good in its own right.) I followed a number of suggestions for tweaking the picture I had read about on-line (setting “Filmmaker” as the default picture mode—which also disables Hisense’s form of motion smoothing—turning off Active Contrast, Super Resolution, and the like), and the picture is awesome. Perhaps you can still get darker blacks with OLED, but this U8N is pushing it pretty close. The most common negative I hear about mini-LED TVs such as this Hisense is that the picture brightness/contrast drops off significantly as one gets 30 degrees or so to the side of the TV. Our setup has all of us within 15 or 20 degrees, and there is no noticeable degradation in the picture quality. At its price point, at least still in mid 2025, I am confident in thinking that it is hard to beat.
