An advanced sensor
This sensor is more advanced when compared to the sensors packaged with the Mindstorms kit, and therefore is more difficult to use in programs. LeJOS seems to have good support for this sensor. Note that this sensor cannot be used in FIRST Lego League competitions and the instructions recommend placing it ~4 inches or more from motors and the NXT brick.
