You can't short them and have the tone change.
I ordered 2 of these. Tried both. You CAN NOT short the leads together and have the tone change. It just doesn't work.

Look Alike But Doesn't Work Alike
Tone doesn't change when shorting wires even though it claims to do so. That's the only way to be 110% sure of what you're tracing.
