First serving made a difference.
I have a 15 year old lab mix. He had his left CCL repaired by TPLO, in 2022. He just had the Figure 8 or Tightrope procedure done on his right CCL (March 8th, 2024), in North Carolina (cannot thank Creedmoor Road Animal Hospital enough). He has arthritis, which likely causes him pain and likely contributes to the fact that he has slowed down considerably. Had to have my veterinarian do blood work (which cost me as much as an original painting by a French impressionist), before the surgery. I was told that Tohbi's (Tohbi means "White" or "White Dog," in the Choctaw language) kidney function numbers were elevated, likely due to his advanced age. I have been cooking for Tohbi (chicken, rice, sweet potato, green beans, peas, and carrots) to help with the kidney function. However, I will be leaving to paddle the Buffalo River soon and need to leave my husband to take over the care of my fur babies, while I'm gone. I wanted to make sure that, if hubby runs out of the homemade stew while I'm gone, that he will have a healthy alternative to mix with Tohbi's kibble. I gave Tohbi his first serving yesterday and it was like I shaved five years off of his age. He was walking all around the house all day wagging his tail. I have not seen him like that for a very long time. So, this food definitely gets five stars. The fact that it is kidney friendly and does not need a veterinarian's approval is a bonus.Update: I'm not sure if the formulation has changed or if Tohbi has just decided that he is not crazy about this food, but he does not scarf it up like he used to. So, I'll probably only use this if I happen to run out of the home made chicken stew that I generally cook up for him.

Not Happy
My dog refuses to eat this. She is in need of a kidney diet due to being in kidney failure. I have an entire case of unopened cans minus one that I'm stuck with. Not happy. Expensive product that even my healthy border collie turned his nose up at. I don't recommend if you have a picky eater. Very frustrated that I cannot return unopened factory sealed cans. I guess I'll be sure to read the fine print from now on.

Works
Why did you pick this product vs others?:Have been using this food for around a year, I mix it with Dr. Harvey's Canine Health and by dog's kidney values have held strong since she was first diagnosed with renal failure.

Not dog approved
I was looking for an option that didn't require a trip to the vet to pick up when running out. 12 of these small cans cost what 12 large cans of Science Diet k/D low phosphorus cost. My dog prefers SD over this. Still an option, but will only purchase if absolutely necessary.

Happy to find this
I am very happy to find affordable kidney friendly dog food, but my little fuzzy gourmets are not overly fond of it. They will eat it when hungry, tho.

Best dogfood for dogs going through renal failure
My dog is in 3rd stage renal failure and this is the only dog food he will eat! And the vet approves! He also loves the renal treats by Dave’s and likes the canned dogfood from Dave’s as well. Thank you Dave’s for most likely adding more months to my dogs life!

Deceptive, Dangerous & Non-returnabe
1. The cans clearly state intermittent or supplemental feeding only, undoubtedly because they can’t legally sell it as real dog food. That should be clearly displayed on the listing but it’s not because they would con fewer people into throwing their money away on dangerous garbage. 2. Worse yet, feeding instructions would have my 11-lb dog consume 15 ounces, which is 2-3 times what she eats in a day. She would never eat that much even if it tastes amazing, which I doubt. And 3. Of course it’s nonreturnable, so I’m stuck with a case of useless garbage that I can’t use.
