Solving Product Design Exercises: Questions & Answers

For those who are frustrated after they didn't get much feedback on their design interviews :)
Fast read. To the point. It is exactly what i was looking for. In the past year I have failed on-site interviews with Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google. I didn't get much feedback on my design exercise and was pretty frustrated and lost. Your book helps a lot in figuring out what was missing from my process and how to organize it better for when time is limited.Things I loved about the book:• Intro to what design process is like• Detailed play-by-play of the process and MOST IMPORTANTLY how long each step should take ( i realized that was my biggest mistake)• Those 4 design exercises and solutions! They are all different and cover majority of the cases that will happen. It is super helpful to have other exercise ideas listed out and suggestion of how one might come up with the design exercise.• Section for the interviewer was very interesting. Nice to see what is going through their head.• Resources section is AWESOME!!!! Saved me hours upon hours!Things I didn't like too much:• Interviews were a little underwhelming, I almost feel some of their quotes could have been pulled out and put in the beginning of the book. But that's just being too nit-picky since I can't really think of what is wrong with this book.

Highly recommended for designers, students, makers, or entrepreneurs in the design industry
The author shares his experience and knowledge through many years of working at big tech companies. As a designer I was familiar with a lot of the concepts and also totally surprised by some techniques I had never heard of. Great little book
I bought this book to help me out with interviewing for product design roles. I was struggling making it past final rounds and after reading this I got an offer after the next place I interviewed at.It’s a super easy and straightforward read. The design process and outline that the author gives is really helpful for giving structure when solving a design prompt. Almost all companies will give some sort of on-site exercise nowadays during the interview process so having a book like this walk you through how to solve it is invaluable.I highly recommend you do the exercises in the book rather than just read about them. Time yourself for an hour to make sure you can get through everything. Practice makes perfect. You will feel so much more prepared when you go in for your next interview.

Cool highly specific information
This book is a nice quick read. The information is highly specific though, and may not be relevant to everyone. I think that it's most useful for new product/ux designers looking to interview at tech companies for the first time so that they won't be caught off-guard when asked to demonstrate their thinking process. However, in my experience most of the companies I interviewed at did not use white-boarding sessions or take home exercises (like the book focuses on) and instead opted for more traditional interviews. The process is still good practice for tackling ux problems and the exercises were fun/constructive to think about. The illustrations were helpful and gave me some ideas on how to better illustrate my own design process in my portfolio. I wish that the book talked more about portfolios, that would have been a really useful. This book is expensive for what you get. Its a thin paperback that you could read in probably 2.5 hours. However, I looked at the publishing date on the back of the book and realized that this book appears to be self-published and made to order by the author. The publishing date was actually the day after I placed the order. I'm assuming that this is why the price is so high. It's unfortunate that there is no kindle version, I personally prefer kindle books because they save money and the environment. One of the design exercises in this book was optimizing the amazon ebook publishing experience... I'm assuming the author must have had some issues with it?

Helped me get jobs in 2 different rounds of job searches!
Not only are the exercises extremely helpful and realistic, there is also a framework that is priceless. This framework helped me answer so many questions and feel confident throughout interview processes. Highly recommend!

Highly recommend to anyone studying for design related interviews.
This book is excellent. Even if you already feel adept at whiteboarding it really helps give a structure around your thinking so that you can be precise and confident during an interview session. I highly recommend this book to anyone I know in the field or looking to transition into the field of design, this includes PM's, managers, designers, etc... It's also helpful outside of the interview setting for organizing thoughts and process to help better communicate your ideas. It's overpriced but you won't regret it.

Decent book but not worth the price tag ($40+)
The book gave some practical product design examples but it honestly is worth at most $10
