A router lift has a lot to offer in terms of safety and precision for repetitive jobs. But a premium brand like JessEm or Rockler is a pretty substantial investment, and is probably overkill for the average hobbyist.If you're prepared to consider an unbranded alternative, this product offers pretty decent quality at 1/4 of the price.You do sacrifice refinements like swappable insert rings (you are restricted to a 42mm opening for the bit) and levelling screws, but if you can live with that the functionality is similar.As for construction, the worm-gear, tensioners and guide posts are significantly less substantial than premium offerings, but they are still pretty robust and are perfectly adequate for light work. The plate is flat, and so far as I could measure, all the angles are accurate. Everything is cleanly machined and nicely finished.In terms of usability, the 51mm lift should mean that you can raise your router high enough to change bits without having to invest in an offset wrench. Compared to premium offerings the height adjustment is lightweight and a bit crude, but it's still fit for purpose.The kit comes complete with all the tools and fittings you need to set up, so it's ready to go. Unfortunately there are no instructions beyond the images in this listing, which even at this price-point is poor. But it's hardly rocket science so I doubt that you'd have much of a problem figuring things out.As for compatibility, you're on your own - they don't offer any lists. The tensioner can accommodate motors from 64mm to 66mm in diameter, provided there are no obstructions, switches etc that will get in the way. You'll simply have to judge this yourself from the information in the listing, and perhaps be prepared to do a little bodging.So is this a drop-in replacement for a premium router lift? Clearly not - you do sacrifice some features, adaptability and robustness. But if your budget is tight and your usage is light, this kit is still worth considering. I've docked a star for the lack of a manual and the basic nature of the height adjustment, but it's still a decent 4-star buy.
