Cartoon Network: Steven Universe: The Complete First Season [DVD]

It arrived in pristine condition, sooner than projected, and everything inside is in perfect condition. It's so good to see that the western hemisphere's finally getting Steven Universe season sets instead of the bite-sized episode pack DVDs Cartoon Network has become enamored with in recent years. It covers Gem Glow all the way through Joy Ride, in a way that's interesting to note. While the majority of the list matches the order on Ian JQ's blog, the episodes Shirt Club, Say Uncle [the non-canon Uncle Grandpa crossover episode, the exclusion of which is understandable], and Story for Steven are noticeably absent from the episodes in this DVD set. Instead, it appears Shirt Club and Story for Steven were replaced with Full Disclosure and Joy Ride [though those last two are properly placed after Jailbreak]. I'm not sure why this is, but it's the only thing about the set that really seemed out of place. Also, I noticed the art style of the box seemed similar to that of the Adventure Time Season Sets. Rest assured, and I was relieved as most fans will be, the design of the box underneath and the discs inside merely show the gems of each main character [though only Garnet's triangular cut gem makes it into the box] instead of cartoon anatomy being peeled back to show muscles and bone and whatnot. Though, considering Gem physiology, the design of the inner box and discs themselves actually follow Adventure Time's precedent, but in a clever and less nightmare-inducing manner.

I bought this so they will release the blu ray.
As stated in my headline, I bought this only so CN will see there is a market for the blu ray this set SHOULD be. Steven Universe is one of the most daring, original, creative, and outright enchanting shows to come out this decade. This season starts off fun and light and stays almost throughout. The last couple episodes hint at the greatness to come but this season is still filled with gems (no pun intended) regardless.Tiger Millionaire, So Many Birthdays, Giant Woman, Alone Together, Stevens Lion; this season is bursting with content that will return in seasons to come and be expanded on in wondrous ways. Don't listen to anyone foolish enough to call this season filler. The word they meant to use was 'world building', and season one does this beautifully. Season One of Steven Universe is an unquestionable buy and I very much hope I'll be able to repurchase this excellent season on blu ray, so I can see it in the highest possible quality, to reflect what the show provides.

Steven!
My kids love Steven Universe. Its nice to have all of season 1 in one place and easy to keep together then buying separate dvd's with a few episodes. They are looking forward to season 2 set and hopefully they release the other seasons in dvd sets soon. Steven Universe is a great series for kids of all ages. They have great messages of acceptance, love, and the belief in the power of friendship. There are many instances you can connect with the main character in his inner challenges while growing up and being different. Great set for many hours of enjoyment.

FINALLY a proper collection for fans!
After waiting years, Steven Universe fans finally have a hardcopy set that makes sense! For the longest time, CN was only releasing DVD volumes with a few episodes each, all in random order. The show is so visually stunning and the music is top-notch... a fact they seem to know because the extras in this set are almost entirely about the music of the show. The sleeve over this set's case slides up to reveal Steven's gem on his belly - reminiscent of him pulling up his shirt to reveal the gem. Clever and cute gimmick.Overall just a great set, and I can't wait to see the next one released! (Hopefully with even more extras)

The music is the crown jewel of the special features, but is slightly spoilery
I absolutely adore this series and I give the season itself a perfect 5/5. This review is based only on the quality of this release and the special features. The 52 episodes are presented in full, including their closing credits. (Note: "The Return" and "Jailbreak" aired on CN as one half-hour special and had a 30-second extended version of the closing theme. This is not the case on this DVD. The episodes are split up and so are their credits. It's a minor disappointment to not have the 30-second end theme, but on the other hand I prefer the episodes split, for consistency's sake. The featurettes focus mostly on the music, which makes sense since so much of the charm of this show comes from the songs. Many "live" versions of the songs are included, so we get cool demo and alternate versions for our listening pleasure. However, there are minor spoilers as a result, because some of the songs come from later seasons. Most buyers are probably up-to-date on this series, but just in case you are checking Steven Universe out for the first time, use caution when exploring the special features. There are non-music-focused features as well. I loved the inclusion of full storyboards/animatics for select episodes. My only serious con is the fact that this is only available on DVD. I would buy a Blu-ray set in a heartbeat.

I have to see this DVD set is really amazing! Plus
I got this DVD because the episodes on my Fire TV stick were out of order and so I have something to watch on long car rides. As a fan of this show, I have to see this DVD set is really amazing! Plus, if you slide the covering off it reveals Steven's gem! The one downside is that I, personally, think that Steven look weird on the cover, but I can live with it. I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to get into Steven Universe or long-time fans.P.S. The show get's good when they introduce Lapis.
