This author is very knowledgeable about music.
I have several of this author's books and all of them give you the information to play the kind of music your wanting to play. I would recommend any of his books.

Probably great if you already play this way...
It is not what I had hoped it would be. I spent hours reading reviews for this type of book and thought this would really help me. I have played piano for 40 years but not country style. My husband and I sing southern gospel music and I would love to be able to accompany us and not always use tracks or guitar. This is just not helpful at all. I wanted to learn how to do a basic left hand rhythm with a little right hand improvisation. This book does not provide that and I don't know any of the songs.

I learned Some New Licks
Very useful for the beginner. Easy exercises that build quickly into fun licks.

Great songs, great variety
Fairly easy it you can read music reasonably well. I can't sight read well, and the CD makes it easier. I had no major problems reading the music .

Just what I was looking for....
If you are a beginner, you'll need another source for learning chords, progressions, and scales. This book covers those things, but not in a beginner-friendly way. It's pretty dry; however, that does not detract from its usefulness. It was exactly what I was looking for to learn country piano/keyboard. (I was classically trained.) I think my copy will become well-worn and dog-eared before too long.

If you are a classic & jazz player, this can be a challenge
My wife plays piano beautifully. Mostly, she plays classical and jazz. Country Piano has a lot of improvisation and "fake book" style of playing. My wife is struggling with the idea that many country pianists "play it by ear".

Superb Country Piano Volume
A rolling review:Having searched in vain for a copy of Koala Books' Progressive Country Piano Technique, the follow up volume to Progressive Country Piano Method by the excellent Peter Gelling, I ordered Country Piano by Mark Harrison instead. As I expected, Country Piano by Mark Harrison delves far deeper into the theory and trademark sounds of the genre than Peter Gelling's Progressive Country Piano Method - which is NOT to bash Mr Gelling's sterling effort at all. In fact, it's one of the best Country primers on sale anywhere and comes highly recommended for players of any age and/or ability.Country Piano by Mark Harrison then, IMHO (In My Honest Opinion), is THE follow up book to buy after you've absorbed the Gelling piano book(s).Short of getting lessons from the Stranglers' Dave Greenfield, Country Piano by Mark Harrison will hafta suffice!End pt. 1

Great intro to chords and fills in country
This book is a great introduction to the kinds of chord progressions and piano fills you get in country music, and it covers the different kinds of country systematically, including country blues, bluegrass and honky tonk. The book is full of drills to get you used to playing these progressions in all the keys, which is ideal if you're going to be accompanying, improvising or playing this kind of music with other musicians. That said, I'd have liked a bit more space devoted to more complicated right-hand fills and techniques - as I play a lot by ear anyway, I could deduce the chords for myself in most cases, and wanted a bit more on honky tonk / country rag style techniques for the right hand. The beginnings of it are there, as the pentatonic scale is covered well, with techniques on how to play around this for the 'country' feel. I've still learnt a lot from this book, and can definitely recommend it for anyone interested in playing authentic-sounding country on the piano.
