USB C generic EMV smartcard reader
If you have a newer laptop without a smartcard reader that only has USB C ports, no USB A ports, this is really helpful. It is a nice compromise between bulkier card readers and the flimsy fold up kind. There is a rubber grippy strip on the fold out foot and the back, but it is so light that like most card readers you still have to hold it to insert or remove cards. The front foot folds up so it is nice to just throw in your laptop bag without being bulky. Since all the functional parts are one piece, it isn't as flimsy as the fold up kind. And with the little USB C pigtail it doesn't block other ports like some fold up ones do.Chipset appears to have been released in 2018, same chipset as used in several Lenovo ThinkPad laptops. This appears to be a rebranded Alcor 9563, or at least the same chipset. It is supported out of the box on both Windows and Linux. Latest Windows drivers appears to be from March 5th 2024 and looks like it gets regular updates, probably from being deployed on numerous Lenovo (and maybe some HP?) laptops.

Great Out of The Box Compatibility
This CAC reader worked great out of the box with Chrome and Safari browsers. I did find that my CAC was recognized to launch Microsoft virtual desktop, but failed to be recognized by Edge in that environment. It is very lightweight and has a short cord (fantastic). For the price, size, and performance I think this is a good buy.

Poor connection, minimal instruction, hard to use.
So the product comes in a simple box with nothing but just this card reader in it, no manual, no media for driver. The good thing is that as soon as you plug it into the computer, the system could identify the reader immediately and find and install the necessary drivers automatically. But the hardware side of the product seems to be not so competitive. It seems to have a hard time to get a reading on my best conditioned IC card. I have to pull out and re-plug my card multiple times, try different insertion angles before it could finally enter the reading status. The the connection is also very fragile, a slight tap on the desk near it could cause the reading to fail. So definitely be mindful about the connection issues, and avoid using it to serve a customer, as you could easily drive the customer mad by failing too much times in reading their cards.

Works as designed...
This works great with my Samsung laptop. An additional driver is needed for it to work with my tablet but I'm not going to use it with that at the moment. Being able to login to work emails and military pay at home is all I needed. It lights up when it's plugged in. It will change colors to let you know it's reading your card.
