Netter's Orthopaedic Clinical Examination: An Evidence-Based Approach (Netter Clinical Science)

Even better than the first one
The first edition of this text, in my opinion, set the standard for orthopaedic examination texts. I didn't think the second edition would be better, but it is. All the content has had considerable and valuable updates, incorporating the most recent research (up to 2010). The content is also organized better and it's easier to find specific tests you're looking for. The first text had separate sections for reliability and validity, which sometimes made learning about a specific test cumbersome. This edition has this info. grouped together and it's much easier to learn everything you need to know about a specific test quickly. Additionally, there are recommendations at the beginning of each chapter that provide a "down and dirty" summary of the most pertinent evidence-based recommendations to consider when evaluating a given region (i.e. cx spine, hip, etc...). These are surprisingly helpful when you only have a few minutes to review.Like the first edition, the test descriptions are crystal clear and easy to understand. All of the content is presented from an evidence-based perspective and clearly referenced. Tests are described exactly as they were in the published research. Drawings, photos and illustrations are first rate (Netter). This text would be worth the cost solely for an anatomy text. But add in all the invaluable clinical information and it's a bargain.I direct an internship, and this text get's pulled out to answer questions (or end arguments) from interns at least 3-4 times a day. It is a "must-have" for anyone who practices or teaches in an outpatient orthopaedic clinical setting.Buy this book and you will become a better clinician and diagnostician. It's that simple.

organized well and detailed index
I also own the ortho clinical guide by "Cook" but what I like most about this book is having all the anatomy and quick overviews in each section. Plus the extra info on TMJ and other joints that are overlooked in the "Cook" book. This doesn't have every test often used in orthopedics but it has the best ones with clinical evidence to support the use of specific tests in the clinic. A must have for all PT's.

Excellent
Bought it shortly after I graduated, which I had known about it sooner. Great pics, diagrams, explanations, etc. Netter's plus ortho exam? Such a great idea! For a visual learner, I think this book would be great. Has both pictures (anatomical) and real photos (hand placement for special tests, etc). Well organized and not too much info on one page which can be overwhelming when trying to learn all of this.

Great but could be improved
This would get five stars if it offered better photos/descriptions of how to perform the various tests; a DVD with exams being performed to standard would be extremely useful.Great for clinical diagnoses of musculoskeletal trauma at the FOB.

Above average
I am a physiatry resident and wanted a book for anatomy and tests along with evidence for each. Not happy with the organisation of the data and the detail given but my standards are pretty high. Good pictures and a good book for non specialized professionals.

Exactly as promised
Netter's is my favorite anatomy book and the added special tests are a definite plus. I would rate it 5 stars if it had an explanation on what each special test was testing, which would be beneficial for new clinicians or unfamiliar tests.
