Excellent resources for any aspiring linguist, grammarian, or ESL teacher.
Yule's book is concise enough as not to lose the reader in a mire of impossible jargon, but thorough enough to give readers a firm, well-rounded, and true understanding of major concepts in English grammar. The examples he offers of learner mistakes are great, and can give a brilliant context for creating lessons for students, especially nonnative speakers. As an ESL teacher, I definitely recommend this, but it's a great resource for anyone wanting to solidify their understanding of English grammar.

A Good Guide Book for Language Learners.
The book explains technically how grammar works in the language. It clears ambiguity in the construction of sentences, use of words, articles, prepositions, etc. Very good book for teachers and advanced students.

Oxford Handbook for Language Teachers Series の一冊で有益な書
学習英文法書である。最初の頁にはHow do you explain the problems in*Lady go supermarket meet friend? といった質問があって､ 超初級者用かと思って少々がっかりした。しかし通読してみると他書では得られない情報が数多く得られる。たとえば、1. She told the bad news to all of us.2. She told all of us the bad news.3. She communicated the bad news to all of us.4. *She communicated all of us the bad news.のように、tellではSVOO, SVO to Oの2つの文型が可能なのに、communicate ではSVOOは不可である。2つの動詞はよく似た意味なので「意味の相違で」説明するのは難しい。Yule (p.191) によるとtell(単音節語)はOE起源の語で、OEでは二つの文型で用いられていたので、これが現在に引き継がれているという。一方communicate （多音節語）はラテン語起源で、フランス語を経由して英語に入ってきた。フランス語の語順(SVO to O)が英語でも踏襲されているからだという。ここまでは文法や英語史に詳しい人は誰でも知っているが、次の例はどうだろう。5. Do you offer some coffee to our guest?6. Do you offer our guest some coffee?offerもcommunicateと同じ歴史経路をたどっているが、2つの文型が可能である。理由は、offerは2音節語でアクセントが第一音節にあり、単音節からなるOE起源の語に類似しているからであるという。かなり前に出版された文法書を引き出してきて恐縮だが、通読すると有益な情報が得られる書である。一読をお勧めする。
