Our sand filter started leaking sand into the pool, OH NO! We took it apart, examined all the laterals - all fine. There is a screw in-between each lateral and when we loosened them one fell right off attached to a piece of plastic that had broke off. We cleaned everything and put all the laterals back, even the broken plastic piece, we screwed it in all tight, the laterals seemed firmly in place, put in the new 300lbs of sand and started it back up... way worse! Sand just poured into the pool! We shut it off, not happy at all! All that time and $ for new sand! We then had to start shopping for a new filter as ours was a side mount the whole lateral piece was all soldered in unlike top ones where you can lift it out and replace. We found a Hayward Pool Filter, 24 Inch for $719. Then... started looking at sand vrs glass and WHAT? What are these balls? OMG! This might be the solution! And great reviews! They are too big to get sucked up and be spit back into the pool! So we ordered 6 bags of them... cleaned out all the sand (once again) and put in all the balls and turned on the pool and it worked BEAUTIFULLY!!! And is still working BEAUTIFULLY all day today! SO HAPPY!!!

I added these to my pool skimmer. They help catch dirt, and small plant debris, and grass clippings that might other wise go through the skimmer, and grass clippings. It is helping to keep my filter media cleaner, which equals less backwashing. Having them in the skimmer does not seem to hinder filter suction, at least the pressure gauge is not any higher than when they are out of the skimmer.

All around in function and user friendliness, these work great. Very easy to install, work great and easy to clean for another period of usage.

I replaced my sand with filter balls about a month ago. This is the first time I've inspected them. As you can see, they have absorbed considerable silt and dirt. I rinsed them 3 or 4 times, squeezing out the dirt each time until they were acceptably clean, then re-filled the filter and continued using them. Be sure to run the filter on rinse for a minute or so to get rid of the residual dirty water before running it on filter. PS - I tried just filling my skimmer with the balls when i first got them (as seen on a You Tube video) but they just seemed to foul with all sorts of surface debris that the skimmer would be catching anyway. So using the skimmer to catch the big stuff, and the balls in my filter, seems to be the best working combination. PPS - I backwashed twice before finally removing the filter lid and taking the balls out to clean them. I'm not sure that backwash did much of anything. The balls seem to need to be squeezed out to clean them proper. I won't mind repeating this process once a month.
