Very thin. Actually more like plastic. However it is a pretty nice frame and looks good.

Yes! The Americanflat 16 x 20 Frames you are referencing, let you know in the product description. That the sawtooth hanging hardware is for both Horizontal and Vertical displaying. Great Product! They are my go-to. I use the 11 x 14 and 12 X 16 for my "Framed Poetry Art" projects. My clients love them. I hope I made a "believer" out of you... M.J.

Q: Is it possible to just purchase the plexiglass?

You can get that very thin plexiglass in sheets, very inexpensive. I've gotten it to replace as it does scratch easily & yellows/dulls over time.
