Silly and unbelievable plot. Starts off reasonably well, but goes badly astray
The heroes motivation for marrying the heroine is supposedly so that she can look after his wild teenage ward for a few months. Yes just for a few months! Sounds a bit extreme! Moreover she's clearly too immature and weak willed to fulfill such a role and has the wool completely pulled over her eyes by the crafty young woman who is actually very close to her age. She's not sensible enough or canny enough or committed enough to fulfill the role of parent for this young and very selfish girlShe naively covers for the deceitful young woman helping her get away away with all kinds of lies and trickery. She even agrees to keep the truth from her husband because she's not a snitch. Its the kind of promise one child makes another in the playground. That a grown woman makes such a ridiculous promise to someone she is supposed to be setting a good example to and acting as guardian to, is quite pathetic. It's also a dreadful betrayal of her husbands trust. You want to shake the heroine and tell her that she's being ridiculous and immature, at least the ward has the excuse of being a 17 year old girl. The Heroine can't even speak the same language as the deceiving girl, at least not at first anyway, so it's quite easy for her to lie to Venetia and even make dubious arrangements with her friends while her supposed protector is present. This language barrier is yet another reason to consider her choice as the girls guardian poorly done.I actually cannot believe the doctor would be so stupid as to choose such an inappropriate protector for his Ward. Venetia, the heroine, is completely lacking in common sense and has absolutely no backbone when it comes to confrontation with the manipulating younger woman. She even lets the young girl pass off her lover as the heroines, so that the heroines fledgling marriage to the hero looks like it's about to hit the rocks.
