Q: How protective is the case? Will it protect from cracks and dings?

Yes, it does a great job of protecting the iPod. I would still highly recommend getting Ghost Armor for the screen. I have Ghost Armor on the body and the screen and it still fits perfectly into the battery case. I dont remember if the case came with a screen protector.

Q: Does it fit on the iPod 6th generation

It should work as the 6th-generation iPod touch has identical dimensions to the 5th-gen Touch. From the specs the only differences are internal. Hope this helps. As for the person who warns about buying this item, this is purely a battery pack that the Ipod sits in. It has nothing to do with the inner workings of an Ipod.
