BEST Quilting book, by far!!
This book is fantastic. I've been collecting quilting books for about 8 years now and finally started quilting a little over a year ago. I consider myself a "modern" quilter. A lot of the quilting books I own are so "traditional" and I really don't care for them too much. There may be one or two patterns in them that's I'd use. In this book, The Practical Guide to Patchwork, I can honestly say I'd make every single one and actually "want" to make every single one! I love how with each quilt she offers other fabric options. It's amazing how changing the fabric can change the overall look of a quilt. And that is sometimes what I can't visualize myself. So she's put that right there with each quilt, so it's easy to see! Her patterns are well written and easy to understand. If you are new to quilting or have decided you want to try it, this is the book to get! The "basics" that she covers are invaluable resources. This is a book everyone who quilts should own. To get that many great patterns in one book, it's so worth the price! My only complaint about the book is that she didn't list the names and designers of the fabrics she showcased. She did address that in her book stating that she uses so many different prints and designers, so I totally understand. But it would have been nice to know only because she uses so many FANTASTIC fabrics in her quilts. Most I recognize, but there are a few that I wish I knew what they were. BUT..on the plus side I really love how she mixes it all up. In some quilting books, the quilts pictured are all fabrics from one particular fabric line/designer. I love how she pulls some fabrics from several different lines. That is something I need to work more on and she demonstrates how it can be done. I tend to stick to the safe road and make quilts that are all one line of fabric because it's safe and I know they all "go together". So I do love how she uses all different fabrics and designers in one quilt.Buy this book, you won't regret it!!

Best Quilting Book for Beginners and Advanced
I have bought this book over and over again to give to friends! It has a wonderful step by step guide on how to pick fabric, begin, make and finish your quilt. It includes lots of beginner and more advanced quilts along with different designs for simple backing designs. I cannot recommend this book enough!!

Sew Nice
This book really is sew nice...lots of useful, practical information for the beginner quilter, well-organized information (in an easy-to-read format), lots of illustrations, and photographs and diagrams to walk you through projects. I really like this book. I am glad I bought it, and I'm sure I will use it a lot. I like *most* of the projects. There are a few projects that I'm not particularly fond of and will not pursue. I am not a fan of applique, and there is a pretty project for those that love it. And, there is a project that utilizes the little fabric "yo-yos", which I'm not crazy about either. But, with that said, the book does contain several projects that I do like...quilts with simple lines, a modern feel, a use of white space, and new techniques I have not yet tried. This is a perfect book for a beginner to explore and use. And, it's wonderful for a more confident quilter that it looking for a good resource and some fresh, new patterns.

Really wanted to like this book, but...
I'm not new to sewing, but i'm new to quilting. So, upon reading the positive reviews for this book, i quickly went to check it out at my local library.Well i read through it all. I've been trying to pick a quilt to my liking...but really, im having trouble on understanding the instructions. I feel like i need more pictures as examples maybe? Especially in the part at the end of each segment, it gives you alternate cuttings you could use for the same project. Even then, i was having a hard time understanding. Maybe it's because im new to quilting. But everyone says that this is great for beginners, but im a beginner and still dont "get it".Another thing is that i really loved the look of teh quilts on the front cover, but i had a hard time choosing a quilt inside the book that appealed to me. The only quilt that was making sense to me, was "little leaves?" that had applique' in it (and that was not in the beginner section). But i just didnt feel like doing the whole "cutting out little leaves"....I will scour around other quilting books and see if there is any difference in me "understanding" the quilting instructions, and i will update this review accordingly.Until then, sorry to give the book a 3star. I really did try to read through the instructions over and over. But this is not the book for me.

Practical ideas for beautiful quilts
Elizabeth Hartman's Blog is FUN and so is her book "The Practical Guide to Patchwork". In the introduction Elizabeth points out that "a quilt is something you're likely to work on for weeks or even months. There are many steps, each of which may involve learning a new technique." I was delighted to see that Elizabeth shows the steps in the quiltmaking process in a way that makes it fun and interesting. The first three chapters cover the basics on how to plan and construct a quilt for start to finish. I liked information on use of charm squares and precut rolls of fabric and the patterns in the that use them. There are 12 projects in the book for beginners to intermediate quilters. The book gives suggestions for contemporary color schemes and ways to use whites and solid colors to show off prints to their best advantage. For each project Elizabeth gives suggestions for at least two alternate color combinations. All the projects have suggestions for interesting pieced quilt backs. I would definitely recommend this book to any quilter looking for a good reference book or ideas for quilts that are fresh and modern.

Stunning and Informative
Having returned to patchwork and quilting last year after a long spell of inactivity I found some of the greatest sources of Quilty information was from blogs and one of the most inspirational ones was Elizabeth Hartman's Oh, Fransson blog. So having tried out some of her free patterns in the past I was eagerly awaiting getting my hands on a copy of this book. I have to say I wasn't disappointed. If you are new to the craft there is a useful guide to patchwork and quilting. Then the projects in the book are split into sections aimed at different skill levels: From projects to get you started, to confident beginner and intermediate. The projects are great starting points to build confidence whilst creating attracive quilts that anyone would want to own.One of the great things about this book is the way it clearly tells you how much fabric each project requires and even gives you alternative fabric requirements if you are using different cuts of fabric or scraps. There are also suggestions on how you can make the projects look 'different' through simple changes to fabric choices. The projects are laid our clearly and explained well.If you are an experienced quilter, preferring complicated blocks and patterns this is NOT the book for you and if you buy it expecting to get projects aimed at advanced skill level then you will be disappointed. At no point does this book claim to be aimed at the experirenced patchworker. That's not to say this book wouldn't be a welcome addition to any quilters bookshelf.

Excellent book for modern quilters
After my sister demanded her copy of this book back, I broke down and bought my own. It has a excellent description of techniques and 12 projects ("Projects to Get You Started", "Projects for the Confident Beginner", and "Intermediate Level Projects"). The quilts in this book have a modern, contemporary look. I can't wait to try them all!

Poor image quality
Unfortunately, I missed my window to return this item. The book is amazing, I actually have the hardcopy, but unfortunately the images in the kindle version are extremely pixely and it is almost painful to read. I wonder how this can happen, whether the scan is just of a very low resolution. I would recommend this book but you should get the hardcopy not the kindle version and I hope amazon will fix this issue as I have had the same problem with several other kindle books.
