The best book on improving your balance I have read lately. If you have balance problems this book is for you.
As a lifetime student and instructor of numerous martial arts my balance was great up until about six years ago. I had developed some serious medical problems which affected my balance. My advancing age also did not help the situation. As I look back I don’t know why I did not begin practicing specific balance exercises; however, I have recently begun reading everything I could find on developing better balance. I have also begun to employ balance exercises in my every day workout routine.I have to say this fantastic book (How to prevent falls by Betty Perkins-Carpenter) is the best book I have read lately on improving your balance. It is a 6 step plan that I found easy to follow, even though I am not advanced enough to do the entire program at this time. This wonderful book is organized into six chapters. After the introduction explains how the program works the first chapter covers stretching in bed exercises, which I found to be a great way to begin the day.The second chapter, which is my favorite, goes into detail on numerous balance exercises. I now practice these movements every day. The third chapter shows ball handling activities. The fourth chapter explains how to walk to improve your balance. Chapter five is an important chapter because it explains the importance of learning how to slump if you feel yourself falling. The final chapter emphasizes learning to dance using your pillow. In conclusion, if you desire to improve your balance for whatever reason, this book is a must read. I wish I would have read this book six years ago.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

A very good book....right on subject & easy to use.
Met my higher expectations. The book is easy to read and follow. The print size and space between the words and lines are plenty big enough to conveniently have the book with me and fully opened as I go through the various functions. The illustrations are excellent, as are the descriptions. Many, but not all, of the exercises are the same as practiced in the well documented "Silver Sneakers" programs. A wide variety of exercises are offered, all very comfortable for elderly people or those with some physical limitations to try. No equipment is required, and all exercises can be conveniently done in a small room within the home.I'm very pleased with it, and I'm glad that I bought it.

Great exercise program
I am a 9-year post stroke survivor and have recently re-embarked on a new physical therapy program because of balance and falling issues. This book emphasizes the right exercises that can be done daily for flexibility, sttength anf SENSE OF BALANCE which are critical In avoiding falls. And it has LOTS of exercises for walking and mobility. I like the organizarion of each chapter - explanation of why, how, and fun pictures. A great appendix with a contract with one's self, safety checklists, websites and footnotes. We.can't be slackards! The print is large enough to see while exercising or if reader needs large print. I took this book to my physical therapist who said the book's program is excellent.

Exactly what I was looking for.
I bought this for my mom, but I read it first. My mom is 92 and has fallen so many times, she's scared to walk without a walker. This book is very well written, simple, funny and contains just about everything you can do to prevent falls and even teaches you how to fall without hurting yourself. It's got large print, lots of illustrations and little quotes from famous people about getting old. It has some exercises she probably won't be able to do, but many that she can. I would highly recommend this for anyone who is getting older and having trouble with their balance.

Some Unique Ideas
I bought this book for my mom, who at 93 is beginning to experience falls more often. The exercises range from morning stretches in bed to using a simple chair for balance while swinging your limbs. There are wonderful ideas for slip-proofing your home & a truly unique idea of practicing slumping into a chair to soften the effects of possible future falls. After weeks following this book's gentle practice my flexibility & energy levels have increased. I notice a difference whenever I skip a day--not sleeping as soundly, etc. These exercises make for an easy, enjoyable routine.

Very useful
This book has a lot of good suggestions for exercises and various methods to prevent and deal with falls. I have some balance problems and was glad to find a book that addressed some of my concerns and provided suggestions that I can implement into my everyday life without a lot of special equipment and expense.

Very complete and useful exercises for balance.
This book talks down to the reader, and the illustrations are more cutesy than they need to be. But it's a great introduction for those who don't exercise, and there are plenty of variations to help keep someone working.

Excellent falls prevention guide.
I am a qualified personal trainer, NHS Health trainer and therapy assistant with fifteen years of community care experience, I strongly recommend this excellent book to any family member seeking an easy to follow, yet highly effective, falls prevention guide for their loved ones, my father is in his late seventies and loved it, his balance has vastly improved and inspired a daily fitness regime. Hopefully their will be no more late night hospital visits to A & E.It would also serve as an excellent guide for those transitioning through post treatment rehabilitation seeking to improve their balance and co-ordination. Superb!
