Has sufficient strength to punch a starter in soft metal or wood. Haven't tried them on steel though. They do include a set of replacement punch points. Overall, just what I was looking for.Follow-up - 6/28/25: Pretty much as useless as my old one - neither of these punches has any impact release. Still feel the the spring tension but they are not locking and releasing as a normal spring punch should have. Outside my window of return so they really aren't even good for a standard center punch. Best to look for a higher quality spring punch.

The end of the 'guide bushing' with the hole in it needs to be flat and smooth. Use coarse, medium and fine sandpaper to polish the end with the hole. The smaller end of the 'hammer and spring' part also needs to be flat and smooth. The spring twists off to reveal the small end. The same sandpaper treatment may be used. It will hardly take five minutes to tune things up. This treatment will maximize the consistency and the force of the spring impact. As pointed out in other reviews it's not going to be very deep mark on hot or cold-rolled structural steel, but it does make a mark. The tip of the tool seems durable enough and a spare tip was included for both. The price is hard to beat. ~$3.50 each. Alternatives are available at a similar price at HF without needing modification, but work the same.

The first pair I got one worked,one did not.The second pair same thing,they work ok when they do work would not order again.

Wouldn’t recommend two came in the pack one of them never worked from the start and the second one is weak at best would’ve returned but honestly you get what you pay for and it’s not enough money to make the effort to return
