Silent and dark.
11/19/16: Amazingly, still running on the original batteries, still working perfectly, still glad I bought it. I now have 3 and will be buying a 4th.4/10/15: Still a great clock. Still on original batteries. Works so well I'm ordering two more for other rooms.2/14/14: Still working great and still on the original batteries! Kept perfect time through recent power outages (obviously, since it'1s battery operated) and kept me from oversleeping.12/12/12: I've been using this for a couple of weeks now. Here's my more informed thoughts: This is a fabulous clock IF you don't need to see the time at a glance in a dark room! LCD displays of this type do a great job of giving excellent contrast and visibility with REFLECTED light, but NOT with TRANSMITTED light. So, with any light from a lamp or any other source, the display is easily readable from very wide angles. BUT, when trying to read the display with the built-in backlight, either the dim glow light or the brighter backlight activated with the light/snooze button, the LCD display does a poor job of blocking that light, and the display cannot be easily read unless viewed from a narrow angle, from slightly above the display looking down. Furthermore, if you want a fairly dark room, the dim backlight is still too bright and will put a soft glow throughout the entire room, much more that an LED clock will (the glow light can be turned off with a slide switch on the back). If you want to be able to glance at the clock at night and tell the time, then skip this clock and buy one with an LED display. If you like your bedroom to be absolutely dark, then this is the clock to have. I also am finding that the volume of the alarm is just right: loud enough to wake you without startling the daylights out of you.Other notables:1. Numeral height is 1 3/4 inches. If you can't read this then you need a talking alarm clock.2. Easy to set. The set buttons work well and are intuitively obvious.3. The alarm is quieter than I expected but is sufficiently loud unless you are a sound sleeper or sleep with earplugs. If that is the case then you might need to look elsewhere.4. The automatic backlight can be enabled or disabled via a switch on the back of the clock. With the backlight disabled, there is absolutely no light that eminates from the clock.5. The automatic backlight, though dim, still considerably lights up an otherwise dark room.6. The large combination snooze/light button on top of the clock will illuminate the display relatively brightly for 5 seconds. The snooze delay is 5 minutes.7. The construction is all plastic as is usual with a product like this, but it is not fragile. I've already dropped mine to the carpeted floor with no ill effects.8. It is absolutely silent in operation until the alarm sounds.9. The clock takes 3 AAA batteries which fit snuggly into the battery compartment. Care must be taken to ensure that all are well seated or the compartment lid might not close properly, otherwise the lid closes well with no bulging.10. As with all LCD displays, there is a sweet viewing angle that works best. With reflected light, the display can be well read from a little below to about a 45 degree angle from above and about a 75 degree angle from either side. It can be read somewhat poorly from a lower angle, so it would not work well if placed on a high shelf or on a dresser that is higher than a bed. On a desk where you are normally looking somewhat down or at eye level on a bednight stand, it is easy to read. Visibility from exactly eye level with the dim backlight in a dark room is worse than with reflected light. When illuminated with the backlight, the viewing angle is quite small: from about 20 degrees above and looking down, otherwise the display is not visible at all with the backlight. If it is within arms reach, simply pick the clock up and tilt it so you can see the time.11. The slide switch in back to turn the alarm off is a bit clumsy and not always easy to manipulate without picking the clock up.12. The size of the clock is 5 1/4" x 3" x 1 3/4".13. This clock is NOT a piece of trash. It is well designed and sturdily constructed. So, I'm happy with this clock and most others will be too unless you want to see the time at a glance in a dark room. The clock is absolutely silent, it is easy to read with any reflected light, it is sturdy and should last a long time, the batteries last a loooong time (6 months & still going), it's immune to power outages and, with the backlight disabled, does not produce any light. Just realize the limitations as I've mentioned above.I'm thinking of buying another for my office desk.Update 11/29/2020: Still works, still using it, still like it. The eneloop batteries I use in it last a looooong time. Great purchase. I now have 6 of these types of clocks scattered around the house and garage.

Small and simple as I wanted
I wanted a small simple clock with a large display and this is it. The only drawback is that the numbers are dark against a non-lit background so the time is not visible in a dark room without having to hit the button on the top of the clock (on demand feature.) I did not take this into account before I purchased it.

Don’t waste your money/Not as advertised
The clock can’t be read very easily. You must push a button to activate light which doesn’t stay on even if held downHad the clock 10 days put brand new batteries in it and had to change run down batteries that quickly. Cheaply made product.

there are SO MANY things about this clock that I like. ---Lights up at your choosing
Oh my goodness....there are SO MANY things about this clock that I like.---Lights up at your choosing, so you can see it at night---Easy to make setting changes---Let's you choose either a 24 hr or an am/pm setting---Even has a SNOOZE button!---Perfect for travel--can easily take with you because most motels only provide ONE clock and not always visible to both bed occupants---Perfect for taking to visiting relatives---have a clock that I'm familiar with---Perfect for placing in our guest bedroom, so visitors have a way to see the time (I bought 2 for this reason)---The SIZE of it is PERFECT--can see the numbers easily without glasses---Very lightweight---Battery operated, so you don't have to worry about finding an electrical outlet nearby---Has temperature readout, what year it is, alarm feature, and month/day readout---Color is silver and looks very nice (I'm getting rid of my old radio clock that has been a dust collector because of its design)

My 1st choice for a clock with an automatic night backlight
Of the 3 clocks that I've found on Amazon with an automatic nighttime backlight, this one is my first choice. The numerals are large and easy to read and the nighttime backlight, though bright, isn't too disturbing to be disruptive. The clock is easy to set up though I did have some trouble inserting the batteries. The last two seemed to be a pretty tight fit and the spring was compressed to it's limit. The cover was a little difficult to replace as well and seems to bulge out slightly. The nighttime backlight can be switched off as well which is a nice feature. Like the other clocks, viewing from below the clock face doesn't work well though there is no problem from the sides or from above. There is also something that rattles around inside the clock, but, since the clock usually will just sit on the table, that shouldn't be a significant issue other than an indication of quality control. Like most inexpensive products these days, all three clocks were manufactured in China.

Fine Clock But the Packaging is Infuriating
This is exactly the kind of 'made in china' clock you're expecting. I like it because the face lights up and it's much larger than most in this price range. Nice and simple design. None of these clocks are going to survive a fall from a bureau or a bedside table - but this one might have a chance.OK, now for the rant... this is the most infuriating packaging I've seen. There should be a special gulag for the folks who design this kind of packaging. You need a phillips head screwdriver to remove it from the packaging. Wow! Unbelievable. They've actually incorporated two screws and washers to hold this in the box it's packaged in. Yeah, that's right. It's insane. See the picture I uploaded if you don't believe me.Update: I've changed my mind after using this for a few weeks and I'm bumping these up a star. It's worth the price. The face is huge and super easy to read. Setting the alarm is probably the easiest of any alarm clock I've had. This clock even has the date on it. And, the automatic blue glow that turns on when it's dark in the room is pretty cool. I would buy another.

Love this little clock. I don't have to have the light on all the time.
I like the option of having a backlight on all the time or not.
