If you're interested in a career in public health, this book is your one-stop-shop guide!
This book gives an excellent, all inclusive tour of 101+ careers in public health! As a PharmD candidate entering pharmacy school at age 21, I had minimal knowledge of my career options outside how I had worked as a pharmacy technician then intern student pharmacist at Walgreens since the age of 16, and minimal knowledge of what a pharmacy residency or hospital pharmacist actually entails. When I was 17, I was in the Pediatric ICU for a week sick with toxic shock syndrome (bacterial severe infection in the bloodstream). My Mom told me an Infectious Disease Pharmacist dosed and monitored my vancomycin daily. From then on, I knew that was the type of pharmacist I wanted to be, seeing inpatients in a hospital, rounding with the medical team. It wasn't until post-residency training and 7 years of clinical practice as the Infectious Disease & Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist at Rush where I learned that Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) had an ID Pharmacist position available, and that the next stage of my career even existed! I jumped on it the moment it was posted, and enjoyed a wonderful career development over those 2.5 years at CDPH. I implemented antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) in several of the skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) in Chicago, and during COVID added in 5-10min antimicrobial stewardship clinical peals for the 78 Chicago SNFs that tuned in for weekly webinars we developed for COVID updates. Unfortunately, since you need to live in Chicago to live in Chicago, we moved to Naperville, IL, which was a family goal once my living daughter Kylie was in Kindergarten (RIP micropreemie Adalyn 3/15-8/23/2015) and my 2nd healthy rainbow baby Hunter could be raised in a safe neighborhood and affordable schools (now 15months old). I am now a Medical Science Liaison at a start-up molecular diagnostics company, IDbyDNA, which specializes in Precision Metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing solutions. My chapter is 225-230 in this book!
