Popeye (DVD)Based on the long-running comic strip created by E.C. Segar (and less on the animated cartoons created by Max Fleischer, which were decidedly di fferent in tone and approach), Popeye follows the sailor man with the mi ghty arms (played by Robin Williams in his first major film role) as he arrives in the seaside community of Sweethaven in search of his long-lo st father. Popeye meets and quickly f alls for the slender Olive Oyl (Sh elley Duvall, in the role she was born to play), but Olive's hand has al ready been promised to the hulking Bluto (Paul Smith), of whom Olive ca n say little except, well, he's large. Eventually, Popeye and Olive are brought togethe r by Swee' Pea (Wesley Ivan Hurt), an adorable foundling , and Popeye finally meets his dad, Poopdeck Pappy (Ray Walston). Direct or R obert Altman in no way tempered his trademark style for this big-bu dget family opus, crowding the screen with a variety of character s and allowing his cast to overlap as much dialogue as they want.]]>

Popeye is still a fun movie to watch.
I remember watching this in the theaters. It's still entertaining to watch. The movie stays close to the source material. There is even an intro cartoon clip in the beginning. This was Robin Williams first lead role in a film. The only thing, from what I gathered online, that Robin didn't like about the movie, was that he had to dub his lines after the film was done, in order for the audience to understand what he was saying. Other than that, he enjoyed doing the movie. The actor, in reality, who stood out, was Shelley Duvall's role as Olive Oyl. Shelley loved the film throughout her career. She was made to play the character. The movie itself, was great, in part due to being close to the source material. Which is something many movies based on games, comics, anime and cartoons, fail at. If you do it right, it'll work and make money. When you change it, it'll fail and you lose money. All the actors did great at portraying the characters from the comics and cartoons. The digital copy code still works. In this movie, because production stuck close to the source material which it was based on, the movie is fun to watch. It has humor, adventure, a great cast of actors, a great soundtrack, setting, and atmosphere. The movie has lots of character development. The only downside was the ending. It was rushed, but that was due to production having trouble filming in the water, especially with the octopus. People wanted to see Bluto get his butt kicked after all the trouble he put Popeye through, but instead, Bluto was punched out, the giant octopus was punched into the air, and Bluto, turned yellow, swam away in fear. The ending scene where the characters are singing, dancing and the music was great. In the end, if you love Popeye, you should check out the film. The Blu-ray is cheap, and has a good amount of extra's to watch.

Sweethaven Is A Town I'd Live In!
I never understood why this film flopped. Iv loved it since I was a kid and it certainly depicts Popeye and friends exactly like the cartoons. Its a musical as well which the songs are not Grammy worthy, but they are catchy. They had a perfect cast for all the characters as well. The only flaw I find in it is the ending. It seems very rushed and its the only time that we see Popeye eat his Spinach. When he does, he's underwater and it all happens so fast you really don't get to see the transformation into "super Popeye" the way we should considering that we had to wait the whole movie to see it. Other then thats, it's a fun movie and deserves more credit then it got.

At Long Last, Popeye on Blu-Ray
I've been waiting to see this film get a Blu-Ray treatment for a very long time. I can say it was worth the wait and has not disappointed. This movie has been around since I was a child. I found it appealing then and still do today. I've been a fan of Robin Williams just about my entire life and am still saddened to this day that he's no longer with us. I appreciate that this was his first starring role in a feature film. It's not the greatest film he's made, but has a very unique charm. I've always liked the attempt to make this beloved comic strip / cartoon character into a flesh and blood live character. All of the characters are entertaining to watch as each person you see on the screen is a professional entertainer whether actor, mime or acrobat. Robin Williams was both an actor and a mime, so his physical routines as well as his dialogue really come together to make Popeye a unique experience. The Blu-Ray release is really great. The film has been restored to near perfection. Picture and sound are all great and no trace of flaws. What I really appreciate is the addition of some brand new documentaries and behind-the-scenes footage. There is stuff on this release that I have never seen before in all of the years since this film has been released. There is some interview footage of Robin Williams and Robert Altman made before they both passed away. There are lots of images taken from when the movie was being produced as well as the film premier from back in December 1980. I was surprised to learn that the village of Sweet Haven is still standing today with pictures taken as recently as 2019. Also, for you fans of the music and songs in this film, there is a feature where you can select the scene with your favorite song and just watch it alone. This Blu-Ray release really does the film justice. Highly recommended for fans of Robin Williams, Musicals and Live Action Cartoon adaptations.
