Clethra barbinervis (Japanese clethra) is a bushy, hardy, deciduous, medium-sized shrub with obovate leaves that are about 12cm long. Leaves turn red and orange in autumn and it also produces small fragrant flowers in racemes in late summer and autumn which attract butterflies and other insects. One of the more interesting things about this plant is its attractive bark. Its richly coloured stems slowly peel off and reveals lavender, grey and cream bark. RHS Award of Garden Merit winner. Flowers July-September. Mature height and spread: 250cm. Supplied in a 3-litre nursery pot. Plant Japanese Cedar into any moist, but well-drained soil acid soil. Choose a sheltered position in partial or dappled shade. Images shown are for guidance only of the expected results from plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary results. Image may be included for illustration of supply but can vary due to seasonality changes (e.g. deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months). We are proud to grow the majority of our plants at our nursery in Devon, which allows us to put them through rigorous trials and testing to provide the highest quality produce.
