Artist 11 Inch Proportional Divider - Upgraded Drawing Supplies & Drafting Tools - Adjustable Caliper & Subject Dividers for Art Drawing Tools

I have had the previous model for years, used it hard. It works as well as it did when it was new. I bought the new model because it appeared to offer more sizing options. It does! Slightly longer to accommodate more set-holes for more different enlargement ratios. Nothing not to love. The manufacturer left this dandy tool just as it was, except to increase the number of set-holes. Perfect. Light weight, a cinch to use and not expensive. I'm delighted and started using it instantly.UPDATE : I have used the new dividers now for weeks, and I have to say that the pointed tips on the old dividers are MUCH BETTER when working with very small references or hard to see areas (i.e., old pictures) than the newer dividers with their blunted tips. The blunter tips on the new dividers create a thickness that means that tiny measurements are not really possible. SAVE those old dividers b/c you're going to need them. ALSO, the newer dividers tend to slip slightly when moving between source and drawing. The longer legs of the divider perhaps contribute to this, and it happens no matter how hard you pinch them -- the very slightest touch/tap on one of the legs and you're back to re-measuring. I'm working on making the the divider a little harder to open and close; there needs to be a tighter fit. Still a good product and worth having for the greater range of ratios.

It amazes me someone would see the specifics of this item, then complain it isn't made of metal or is cheap when it's only $12.99. Trying to find a divider in any store anywhere is impossible, then when you do find them they are ridiculously expensive. This tool is exactly as pictured and plastic, not metal, wood or cardboard. The divider is medium sturdy plastic and for $12.99 a real gift. The one I received is quite easy to manipulate, the red 'button' is a slid tab that slides onto the peg that goes through the hole and holds it in securely. To readjust, slide the tab back, put the peg in the hole of your choice then slide the tab back over the peg. Pretty nifty. Unless you are hard on your tools, this should last for a long time. I like mine alot, not only that I really needed it ...badly, so can't express how surprised I was to even find one let alone usable at a fair price. Basically it's all the average artist needs, one of the professional artist instructors on You Tube has a red one exactly like this that she uses to teach with, so it can't be all that bad. If the tab should break as some fear, there are probably nuts and bolts or something easy to fix it with. Mine doesn't have any burrs anywhere. The functions and use are pretty straight forward. It is easy to adjust and store. My issue could be the same for others with dexterity issues with one of their hands. I don't have full range of motion in my left hand which is the hand I would hold the tool in. There isn't an option to lock the divider in place after my measurement. If I would easily hold them in place it wouldn't be a problem. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the device. This version of the proportional divider will work great for most people.

I have been an artist since 1985 and I'm always looking for ways to improve. This proportional divider is a great addition to my craft. I use it for copying models in a live sketch group where we are not allowed to photograph models. It holds the position well, yet is easy enough to move with one hand which you need to do constantly as you change areas of measurement. Keep your arm extended, and your shoulder square in order to measure accurately. You won't regret this purchase once you learn how to use it properly.

Finally, dividers priced for someone who just likes to draw!I have been searching for proportional dividers for a long time. I don't do any highly accurate drawing or any technical drawing - I just like to draw, and this is a great tool to help with proportion. A friend showed me inexpensive plastic dividers that he had purchased many, many years ago but he wasn't sure they were still available. I found out they weren't.From time-to-time in the last 18 months I've done an internet search for proportional dividers and have only found dividers priced at $100 or more (sometimes much more). That wasn't in my budget and I didn't necessarily need dividers of that quality for my purpose. Of all the "art" companies out there I often wondered why one of them didn't add inexpensive proportional dividers to their product line.Two weeks ago, much to my surprise, these dividers appeared in my internet search. I purchased them from Amazon - they arrived very quickly. They are made of plastic, seem pretty durable, are very light-weight and move smoothly. To change the proportion you just remove the plastic pin and move it to a different hole. It's easy to do and just takes a minute. They arrive in a plastic tube with some very basic instructions for using them. Included is a chart showing the proportion represented by each hole. I haven't used them much yet, but I can't see any reason why with a little care these won't last for many, many years.Before purchasing these I went to the YouTube and watched the video about using them. I found it helpful.The price is so good I'm going to buy a second pair and leave it in my travel bag so I'll have one when drawing away from home.

Measurements dont hold. Very flimsy. I was buying this from a youtube recommendation. Its probably just fine for fine art painting but for my needs doing technical precise botanical drawings I cannot recommend this.It keeps shifting and I can't get the arms to stay in one position if bumped even a little.Cheap plastic parts, not good for technical drawing enlargement the way I hoped. Looks like Im going to have to replace it with a metal one.
