I had a very bad experience with Generac
I had a very bad experience with Generac standby generators. I recommend that anyone looking for a whole house standby generator, consider any other options. I own a second home in the Caribbean. I bought a Generac 20KW propane generator and had it installed at my house 5 years ago. We rarely ran it. Two months ago, just before hurricane season started, the faulty engine on it failed, with only around 40 hours on it. I contacted Generac. They put me in touch with their only authorized technician in the area, on an adjacent island (a 20-30 minute boat ride away). He would not come to my house to repair the generator. But, he said that Generac would replace my engine under warranty, and expressly cover all repair costs, but only if I shipped the entire generator to Anguilla. Verbatim: “You will be responsible for the shipping cost. Generac will pay for the repair.” I could have had a non-Generac technician repair my engine at my home, but I felt good that Generac was offering to honor its warranty, even under those conditions. This turned out to be a very bad decision on my part. After considerable time and expense, I made a special trip ($$$) to my home, disconnected and packaged up the 400lb+ Generator ($$$) and shipped it the technician ($$). The technician reportedly replaced the engine and shipped the generator back to me. Coming off the cargo boat, it was reportedly dropped from a forklift and was badly damaged. It looked like a crumpled soda can. The cargo ship took it back for assessment and repair by the same technician with spare parts from another generator. I haven't seen it yet, except in pictures. It is waiting for me to return and have it reinstalled. I have no idea if it works or not. My original Generac warranty expires in a couple of weeks. I will not be able to reinstall and test the generator until after the original warranty expires. Generac refuses to extend the warranty even to cover the new engine. Generac refuses to accept any responsibility for the condition in which the generator was in when returned to me by its technician. Then, adding insult to injury, I got a bill from the technician saying that Generac now refuses to pay for anything except parts, no labor, despite his promise that "Generac will pay for the repair." Generac will not stand behind the commitments of its authorized representative. I would not encourage anyone to buy a Generac product, especially if you live in the Caribbean, or any distance from an authorized Generac repair technician.

Solid Reliability
Bought the Generac 7042 in summer 2017. Installed by pros, with 200 amp automatic transfer switch. Does everything Generac says it will do, exactly they way they say. Starts itself every other Saturday at noon to recharge the starter battery, circulate the oil, warm up to disperse condensation. Runs about 12 minutes or so.Fired up every time we lost power, maybe a half dozen short periods that first year. But then, Hurricane Michael. No power for 6 days. The Generac 7042 ran flawlessly for six days straight. I had to take it offline at the 100 hour mark to change the oil and filters. Brought it back online, and it fired itself up again and kept running until power was restored. Completely pleased with our Generac 7042 Guardian 22kw standby generator.

Generac FAILURE - Please read and do not buy from Generac.
I own a Generac Stand-By generator. I paid over $4500 for the unit in 2017. To date (11.2019) the unit has 650 hours. The unit has faulted multiple times and been complete down a total of 47 days, until a dealer could order parts, have them delivered and then come out and repair the unit. The unit failed once costing $3500 in parts (luckily under warranty) and recently a 2nd time costing over the units total value! We have waited for over a month for the dealer parts and service tech to get out there to repair it. It's been a horrible Generac experience. I have invested countless hours on the phone with Generac robot humans telling me they cannot do anything.
