Fundamentals of Digital Logic with VHDL Design with CD-ROM

International Edition Review
I am using the international edition of this textbook and so far it seems to be consistent with the US edition (all of the problems have matched so far). The content of the book has been fine, average textbook quality. I will update this review if I run into any differences.

Good stuff
Well written, but like most technical books, you don't wanna just sit down and read it. This book has a fair amount of examples and describes ideas well. Beware: The Quartus II software is Windows only. I understand the industry is comprised almost wholly of Windows PC's, but a lot of students now own Mac's (Boot Camp is one good options here, there are also emulators). Also I have been told by engineers that Altera makes Quartus that works on Linux too.

Good textbook for logic design and VHDL
This textbook is well written, with lots of good examples and problems. The included CD has software that is about two major versions old -- better to download it. But it also has code for all the coding examples in the book, which, if you want to run them, can save lots of time and typos. One needs an Altera DE-2 demo board on which to run them (about $270 for academic users [with pretty restrictive licensing], $495 for commercial users).

VHDL isn't fun but fundamentals are fun-ish
VHDL isn't fun, Verilog is better, blah blah blah VHDL is strongly typed and deterministic blah blah blah Verilog is actually comprehensible by a human blah blah blahIt's been five years since I took the course that used this and now I use it to heighten the monitor I code in Verilog on. That said, the /fundamentals/ inside of it are great, so if you are more comfortable with VHDL and need to brush up on the fundamentals of digital logic... here you go.

If your like me youll struggle
I have taken one computer programming course prior to using this book, It was rough to say the least. The biggest problem with the book is not the content but rather the way at which its presented. It will tell you to refer to diagrams on different pages quite frequently when trying to understand what there trying to get across and most times you'll forget what the point of looking on the other pages were. I ended up using a different book to understand the content and it helped way more than this one because the manner in which it was written was a lot more logical. There is a lot of fluff and wasted reading in this book and it doesn't get to the point of what you need to know or how to learn it.

Not Bad
The book offers a good amount of examples and visual reference while offering very understandable and a medium amount of text. The readings for me have been straightfoward and easy ( compared to my other engineering books) and covers everything you need to know about VHDL design.

Low cost version is poorly printed, on low quality paper.
I've got the low cost edition and I am deeply disappointed. The print quality is low and paper quality is also low. The paper is very thin and almost transparent, so the text from opposite side is interfering with present text. It is really annoying. Some parts of the text are not printed well. Actually, parts of the text on some pages are not printed at all. It seems that somebody forgot to put the ink in the printing machine.

Great book !!
This is book has covered why things regarding FPGA and CPLD in detail. If you want it understand the fundamentals then this is a great book. Also, VHDL programming has been dealt in great detail.
