Informative, intriguing, and easy to read
Excellent work that combines thoroughly researched history with an engaging narrative. I didn't know much about the Aztecs before reading this book, and now I feel like I have an excellent perspective of their culture -- not only theirs but other cultures like the Olmecs, Chichimecas and even the Spanish friars. I love how personal stories were woven in -- like the shipwrecked Spaniard who went native with tattoos and piercings, or Cortes murdering his wife -- it lifts history off the page.

Good read
I learned a lot and it was an interesting read. A good portion of the word I couldn't figure out how to pronounce but still a good read.

Great History of the Aztec Origins
Really enjoyed this history of the Aztec Empire! Was written very well with great maps and photos. We learn a lot about the Spanish Conquest of the Aztec Empire in school, but not much on the origins of the Aztecs. Also, really liked how the author tied in the Olmec, Toltecs, and other native Mesoamerican empires related to the Aztec Empire. The details on how the Aztec tribe grew into the Aztec Empire was fascinating.Keep up the great work.

Written well but very superficial. It needs much more depth.
It is a good book but more or less a “ cliffs notes “ on the subject. Very Superficial without any in depth study of the subject. Better books are available.

Interesting History!
Fun, engaging, and easy to understand!Often times, history is deemed boring. Much of the time, this comes from how it is presented - and this book does a fabulous job of bringing the history in a fun - non-dry way!The Aztecs thrived, built, and grew their empire - through warfare and expansion. Their religious practices have raised questions, turned stomachs, and enthralled historians for years.Through the reading of this book, I found great history, enough so that my kids even listened as I read it out loud to them (which is not easy keeping their attention).Well done, and fabulously crafted - this history of the Aztecs is perfect for youth to adult readers who want to learn more about the Aztec Civilization.

Fascinating insight into an ancient civilization
I have always wanted to learn more about the Aztecs but have never managed to do so. This as an easy-to-read book that provided a great insight into where they came from, how the built their empire and what happened to them.I was astounded to learn that without a fully developed alphabet and without the wheel, they had a highly organized city of 200,000 inhabitants, bigger than cities in Europe at the time. They had a very sophisticated culture, albeit one their encompassed human sacrifice with a very stratified society that flourished as an intricate religious, political, social and trade organization of over 500 city-states. They ruled an area of 80,000 square miles with up to six million people within it and their empire lasted almost 200 years. They had a number system, utilized multiplication division and geometry, used algorithms to calculate area and even worked out when eclipses would occur. They were also one of the first people in the world to mandate compulsory education for both boys and girls. One of the most astounding things I learned related to their practice f human sacrifice. They believed that their gods gave their energy to the people and human sacrifice was a way of recycling that energy. As a result, around 20,000 people became victims of sacrifice, each year! This was a fascinating insight into an ancient civilization that was incredibly sophisticated on so many levels, but in other respects, barbaric by our standards. The book is well worth reading if you want to learn more about the Aztecs and their culture

Reads like a 6th grade text book
If you were expecting any level of sophistication in this book you will be disappointed. It has some interesting information but I quickly developed a strong dislike for the disjointed formatting (think frequent random half pages) and I found the prolific use of exclamation points in a non-fiction book to be condescending if not outright juvenile.I would have liked to see specific discussion of the pictured artworks and artefacts; they were often described as something that an untrained eye can't see or appreciate, which make the pictures seem out of context or even misnamed.I'll finish the book but will probably give to my son for his 6th grade history project. I won't buy another one from the "Enthralling History" series.

Thorough introduction to the Aztec empire
As an introduction to the Aztecs, it was easy to read and gave a good explanation of the rise and fall of the empire. I liked that it contextualised the empire in what came before.I had no idea as to the advanced nature of their civilisation
