Good Stuff. Worth the money.
I have an old violin someone gave me, and I was unable to tune it. Possibly because of the weather, but also one of the pegs is different from the other three, the E. It clearly does not fit the peg holes very well, particularly the small end.The others break free with a loud click, then refuse to stay in place once tuned. I have read up on all this, rewound the strings so that they are properly positioned on the peg, tried using pressure as I wound them. Only occasionally would a peg hold tuning, and it was the D string. With the E, I also tried removing the peg, cleaning it, and then putting a little chalk on it and putting it back in. This *kind of* worked, but not reliably. So I ordered the Hill product.I have a couple of comments. First, it is shaped really wierd. It is in a somewhat loose and inaccurate lipstick-style dispenser, the same size as a lipstick. I does not have a convenient shape to the end (hopefully I did not get a used one), so it was not really possible to apply it to the pegs without removing the. Filing into a better shape would have wasted a lot of product. So I removed the pegs, one by one, cleaned them gently and applied the hill to the shiny strips on the pegs.I replaced all the pegs and tuned the violin. Perfectly. And it has stayed in tune. Even the E which I am sure is not making solid contact with the peghead on the small end.It is still not exactly what I would call very easy to tune, I could never do it with one hand while playing the instrument with the bow, but it is OK, just put some pressure on the strings and they tune and hold.My next temp will be to rebuild the peghead, reaming out the holes and putting in new, properly shaped pegs. But the Hills made it possible for me to play this instrument, and it has a very nice sound. Worth the money.

Good stuff, highly recommended
After recently changing the strings on my violin, the G string began to slip, and it was not possible to tighten the peg sufficiently to stop it. I removed the peg and applied the HIll Compound on the two shiney spots on the peg where it contacts the peg box. Then reinserted the peg and turned it around a few times to cost the peg box with the compound. Then removed the peg and and applied more Compound to the same two spots, reinserted the peg and attached the G string. I was then able to sufficiently tighten the peg so as to not slip. I think that possibly the Hill Compound lubricates the peg and the peg box so that you can insert the peg more fully, getting a tighter fit and stopping the slipping.

Great peg compound, bad product design
It works and transfers very well, but it could be designed in a way that makes it less likely for it to break.

Works great
I've always used this brand for my violin

It works!!
My custom-made fiddle wasn't staying in tune, due to temperature changes I think. The Peg Dope was suggested by a friend, and I used it and no more problem, for now at least! My pegs were slipping, but I understand that it also works to lubricate pegs that won't turn easily. Good stuff. I ordered online and the order was here within a couple of days. I have Prime membership, and live 20 miles from the nearest town, so everything (FedEx or UPS) worked all along the way.

The Old Reliable
Peg dope isn't something one buys often. I only buy it when I can't find the last tube I bought, and then I buy a brand with characteristics I know. Hill's has never disappointed me.

Seems old & dried out
Previous items have been closer in consistency to lipstick but this purchase was closer to dried clay

If your pegs stick, slip, or skip this compound is worth the try!
I was sad to know that the cheapest price on amazon wasn't prime eligible until I went to a local violin shop and say that this was more expensive than both the prime and the lower price. This peg compound really made a huge difference in how smooth my pegs turn. Two of my strings, A & E, were slipping pretty consistently, but now all of them turn as smoothly as smoothly as a new peg- and they stay there! I highly recommend if your pegs are slipping, skipping, or sticking!
