Q: does it work on 0.5 gallon tank with a betta

I use my PennPlax in a 5 gallon tank with a betta and it works great. I do partial water changes every 2 weeks. Are you asking if it works with a tank that hold 1/2 gallon? (0.5) If so, I would say NO. It is too strong for such a small space. Also, betta's should be kept in a MINIMUM 2.5; but 5 gal. or more is optimal, with heater and filter.

Q: I forgot to rinse it before installing it and all this white stuff came out-- is that okay? I'm only running it right now to cycle the tank (no fish.)

Hey Kristy, Thanks for your question. The white stuff you're seeing is just dust particles from the filter media. It won't have any negative effect on your tank. Just let it continue to cycle and all of the particles will be picked back up by the filter.

Q: How long is this filter and does it provide mechanical filtration?

It is about 4" long and works very well by pushing air/water through the filter material and charcoal. A good investment for small tank. (1-2) Gallon) Have been using one for about 15 years. Good product!!

Q: Will this work for a round bowl? No flat sides on mine

It can just lay on the bottom out of the way if your bowl is big enough. I have a little tank and just leave it without the suction cups and it works fine. You could also get a small sponge filter for your bowl. They both need an air pump to work and are about the same cost. Hope this helps.
