fyi - they actually ARE GLUTEN-FREE afterall
GOOD NEWS - they actually are gluten free. Here is a statement fromEDEN's website."Eden Foods' Gluten Free information is not solely based on testing. We also rely on superb manufacturing practices and meticulous handling, being highly motivated in the prevention of allergen cross-contamination as exemplified by our food safety programs such as HACCP (Hazard Analysis at Critical Control Point), AIB International audits, and BRC Global Standards. Eden Foods' suppliers that also handle our foods are severely monitored by us, and under our requirements are we deem them necessary to accommodate our, and our customers', desires.Currently intriguing to us are gluten containing food items that are fully fermented, converting their composition back to their building blocks. This causes them to become Gluten Free. In these cases all of the proteins have been broken down by fermentation into their component amino acids, or components of the amino acids, removing the triggers of gluten sensitivity that are in gluten proteins. An incomplete fermentation process will leave proteins whole that more complete fermentation would have broken down. Incomplete fermentation, whether by choice of the maker for desired effect, or just for shortening the process and lowering their cost, is a reason to be cautious about these foods, but Eden Foods tests them for a degree of certainty. Only when fermentation is fully complete, do cases such as this become Gluten Free.An example of gluten containing food becoming gluten-free through fermentation are Eden Shoyu Soy Sauces. Wheat is an ingredient, but when the shoyu soy sauces are tested for gluten, there is none, because they were completely fermented and the gluten sensitivity triggering proteins no longer exist. All Eden Shoyu Soy Sauces are Gluten Free."::::I have a serious digestive problem and I can no longer eat protein and starch together - since the body produces acid to break down protein and alkaline to break down starch. Actually this is true for everyone, in that combining starch and protein in one meal taxes the digestive system and causes digestion by way of "rotting" - which explains foul gas. Anywho, when one eats protein with vegetables instead of with starch, and starch with veggies instead of protein, the body digests meals much more efficiently and quickly - sans stinky gas. As they say, we are as healthy as our digestion. While lentils and peas are actually complete proteins that can be digested quickly, other legumes like beans are incomplete proteins and require starch to convert to a complete protein for digestive ease.So that is why I believe Shoyu has been added to these beans - it adds both flavor and the needed starch to facilitate bean digestion, along with cultures and digestive enzymes created by the fermentation process. If EDEN adds it to Lentils as well it's for flavor, digestive boost, or possibly because everything I've just stated is not well-known. Although I've practices good nutrition for over 20 years, I did not learn about the food-combining snafus until I developed my own digestive health issues.I'm hoping this information helps others. As for the one star rating because of this issue, I personally don't take issue with that. I think that is what drew viewers attention to your post and this thread in the first place. As such it serves and important function to inform.I personally only eat canned food from EDEN, NATIVE FOREST, and SANTA BARBARA OLIVES - as to my knowledge they are the ONLY companies that DO NOT USE BPA LINED CANS. - So I consider all their products 5 star worthy based on that fact alone. However, I think that their products are so good most would agree and rate them at 5 stars - which means a 1 star rating will have a nominal effect on their overall score.I hope that the rating police will see the value in that post, and understand that this information would probably never be seen or considered except for the initial "red-flagging" it with a low rating. - That is certainly what propelled me to take the time to set the record straight.I wish people would turn all that "need to be right" energy into need to be informed and share worthwhile information that could actually help others energy. But I'm sure certain highly anal-retentive individuals will take great offense at my emphatic (not belligerent) use of CAPS, instead of actually digesting what was said here. :?)P.S. - In an effort to help spread knowledge I would like to also say that FERMENTED SOY is actually good for you - it's the UNfermented soy and soy isolate added to nearly everything these days that causes health problems. This is because mimics estrogen and thus raises the level in your body - which is directly linked to increased rates of cancer and thyroid disease. Not to mention that unlike EDEN most companies use GMO SOYBEANS. Don't even get me started on GMOs. Suffice to that it's linked to much higher cancer rates, tumors and complete infertility in rats. Since the cancer rate is now ONE IN THREE I'd give that some serious consideration before dismissing it.FERMENTED SOY as in SHOYU actually has MANY HEALTH BENEFITS.Finally, for those that point out the high sodium/salt content of Eden beans, please research the difference between standard table salt and SEA SALT.Standard table salt used in most products only "causes high cholesterol" because it contains fine glass particles that cut your insides - in response your body produces cholesterol to heal itself. Sea salt does not contain these glass particles. However aside from all that, cholesterol is actually completely misunderstood. There is mounting research that the increase in the Alzheimer's is directly tied to the prescription of cholesterol-reducing STATIN DRUGS. In fact, the brain requires cholesterol to function properly. There is substantial evidence that the consumption of coconut oil (the unrefined, organic, raw variety) actually prevents and in some instance has even been shown to significantly reduce effects of Alzheimer's substantially because it mimics a cholesterol component needed in the brain.Anyway, the truth is out there, people just have to take the time to find it for themselves. I know we're all busy, which is why I took the time to write this.I sincerely hope it helps.

Exactly as Expected!
I like the Eden products. They use pressure cooker heating process which removes any lectins from the beans. These lentils taste great! They have been pressure cooked so you only need to warm them up. I enjoyed the taste and will buy more when I finish these.

Healthy Option
I enjoy these lentils daily as part of my plant based nutrition plan. They serve as my protein and fiber source. This product is flavorful and has the added health benefit of being low sodium. Organic is a must. They taste delicious alone or served over rice or riced cauliflower.

So glad to find prepared lentils
These are close to what I was looking for, but not quite. When I lived in France, I used to buy prepared & seasoned lentils to eat on baguettes for a quick, cheap meal. I've been searching for a something like it here in the States, but I'll have to keep searching. These are a little too liquidy and don't have enough flavor to stand on their own or with bread only, but I'd bet they'll be great to add into soups.

Depends Who You Are
In all fairness, 'Eden Organic Green Lentils' is a good product made by a reputable producer. I see that someone who knows about cooking can use a 15 ounces container to prepare a wonderful meal for three persons. Just add some garlic, onions, broccoli, Herbs de Provence, a tablespoon full of Olive Oil per person, even some walnuts finely chopped, a glass of wine on the side, and you will understand what French people call 'to know how to live.'I am alone in this world, and I am really bad when it comes to cooking. Therefore, this product doesn't do much for me. I opened the first tin container and the lentils look neither appetizing nor inviting. It is because they are intended to be used in preparing a meal. I purchased 12 tin containers, and I am scratching my head asking myself... "what am I going to do with all these lentils?"

Great for Vegetarians
I add some hot sauce and try to eat can per day, and stay full for hours. This is relevant b/c vegetarians often have to scrounge for protein, and many overeat other foods to get it. (Like me, I eat like 6 pieces of pizza if there's pizza around.)i.e, If you're a vegetarian looking for high ROI protein-rich food, or a great calories:protein ratio, here you go.

Delicious
Found out that Eden uses a pressure cooker on their canned lentils which is healthier. It’s great not to have to make them from scratch. Easy to add to soups etc.
