S3X 700c Alex Sub Sturmey Archer 3 Speed Hub Fixed Gear Road Track Fixie Bike Wheel Set with Shifter

I've been riding this hub for many years. I decided to build up a new bike around this wheel set.I've heard a bunch of people complain about this hub and I've determined that they didn't set it up right. The chain tension needs to be set up just right, too tight or too loose and it won't shift. Also the cable needs to be mounted in a GOOD cable stop. I've used the ones that clamp on and they aren't great for this so either braze on cable stops or put it on a bike that already has appropriate ones. If you do this, the hub will take a beating. I've been working courier jobs for over 3 years on this hub, many times for 12 hours a day. I typically skid or back pedal to stop and I can assure you it is long lasting and fun to ride after you get over the lash inherent to the design. It's probably not for everyone, but I love it and will continue to ride this hub for many more years. The only downside is that the range between the gear ratios isn't too wide. I wish they had a different model with a wider range or reductions. I give the hub 5 stars easily. It's a lot of fun.

Great wheel set sit 3 speed fixie hub!I was looking to rebuild a fixie from the frame up with my spare parts box and needed a wheel set. I chatted with a bike messenger who was riding the elusive S3X hub from Sturmey Archer and gave it a ringing endorsement. When I saw the wheel set which included the S3X hub, I realized I couldn’t beat the price by threading my own wheels so I took the plunge and purchased it.I’ve ridden this wheel set for a few weeks and I’m getting used to the feel for when the gear shift the smoothest, but I’m also still fine tuning The shifter/cable adjustment. This isn’t a truly silent IGH, and there is a little slack when shifting, but it’s a comfortable gear ratio(100/75/62.5%) to make riding a fixie a pleasure for this old man.

The wheel set came with everything needed to install and set up. I added a set of jagwire adhesive/aluminum cable guides and ran the housing from shifter to rear cable stop cutting it to length. I am using a free wheel with this hub as documented on Sturmey Archers site. Very satisfied!!

Both wheelsets came true and in perfect shape. Packed perfectly with axel caps and cardboard between the wheels, better than most bike stores. Highly recommend this seller!!The sturmey archer s3x is a great hub, this is my second one. Have used it for winter commuting and it has held up great for a few thousand miles over 5 years. Make sure you have the updated shifter, if you don't contact sturmey archer customer support and they will send you the updated shifter so you don't damage the hub. Also make sure you take the time and set the hub up properly so there is no damage done.
