So just post the mandatory stay-at-home party, energy costs exploded. I've always wanted a kotatsu and the stars aligned for me to build one. I made some legs and runners from beech that I milled up, brace internally with some cheap construction pine 1x2"s, threw on a beech veneer top that I edged with some more beech. All the timber and this heater were easily less than £300, took about a month of weekends to build, and I've been using it for two years now.I installed this heater just by drilling some holes for the tabs and dropping it in. Then I've laid a foil-wrapped piece of hardboard on the back - which was to protect the duvet and top, but has proven totally unnecessary.The heater comfortably heats a large kotatsu (42"x42"x18") with a queen sized duvet draped over it. We barely used the actual central heating save to take the edge off in the morning before work, and we spent the evenings with this on medium to medium-low. After a while it can really get too warm underneath!If it broke tomorrow, I'd buy another in a heartbeat. The felting has held up to years of real world use, No messing around with weird 240-110v transformers. Just supply your own kettle lead and go.Super recommend if you're serious about heating your kotatsu. This thing has done excellent duty and impressed friends and family the whole time. 5 stars!
