Writer's Digest Grammar Desk Reference: The Definitive Source for Clear and Concise Writing

Excellent content, unreadable type
I think Gary Lutz is one of the best living writers in English, so I got this book hoping to glean insights on how he makes each of his sentences so consistently surprising. But unfortunately I couldn't read it.The reviewers who said the font is tiny weren't kidding. The body text is 10 point at most, and the examples are downright tiny. In advertising, they call it mouse type. Which might be OK if the print was sharp and clear, but it isn't. On the copy I received, many of the pages were grainy with very poor resolution, like they were printed on an old inkjet printer. This made the book unreadable. If you're a young person with keen eyesight, you might not mind as much. But those middle-aged or older will likely struggle with this particular edition.Writers's Digest publishes some good books, but the print quality isn't always the best. But my other WD books have normal size fonts so it was less of an issue.

Informative and Thorough Grammar Guide (But The Book's Text Is WAY Too Small)
"Grammar Desk Reference" includes over 300 pages of information, covering a wide range of topics related to grammar, punctuation as well as mechanics and usage. There is so much helpful information crammed in the pages, however the text in the book is insanely small. Not sure why the author chose to do this, but I think I speak for most when I say I would rather have a larger, longer book and normal size text versus a shorter book with tiny text. Writers strain their eyes enough as it is looking at a computer screen or paper all day!

Books like "Woe Is I" are lots of fun
Books like "Woe Is I" are lots of fun, but they cover only highlights of the most frequent grammatical errors. This grammar is more complete. I like it because it's written with an editor's slant (largely prescriptive) rather than the idiosyncratic (often in the attempt to be original) and usually descriptive views of linguists who like to think anything goes because language is always evolving.

Scarily Thorough in English Grammar
It's a great book. It opened a whole new world of English grammar to me. I didn't know we had so many different types of phrases in English grammar. I would have liked exercises but this is okay. I do want to buy the paperback but I'm afraid of the reviews that mention the small type. Anyway, if you want a really great English grammar book, buy this one on Kindle.

Nice Desk Reference Book
Excellent grammar desk reference book. It is detailed and well structured, which makes all grammar references easy to find. The paper is coarse and the print too small, otherwise I might have given it five stars.

Good Remedial Reading
The author breaks down the eight parts of speech and grammar: Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adverbs, Adjectives, Conjunctions, Prepositions and Exclamation. This refresher course is easily explained and illustrated with numerous examples. A must buy.

This book is an excellent reference book
This book is an excellent reference book. I had no problem with the size of the print.I had a couple of disagreements with the authors about matters of style. But, they have compiled a very useful and comprehensive resource with easily accessible annotations.

Great punctuation guide too
Okay, so it's a great grammar guide, but it's also the best punctuation guide I've ever read (I'm a freelance editor and have read a couple dozen books on usage and style). This book lives next to the Chicago Manual of Style on my desk.

Three Stars
The print in this book is incredibly small, so small that I actually didn't read it.

Great reference book
Grammar Desk Reference. It's the kind of reference book that you'd want to have at hand when you don't know the correct word or phrase to use for a specific writing purpose. The one big drawback is that you need really healthy eyes to read some sections of the book, particularly the writing examples. I guess the compact size of the book comes at a price. Other than this issue, it's a highly recommended book.
