A nicer man you just could not meet! John Henny is one of those people who walks his talk and is passionate about helping others to sing and teach singing. His other books and courses are very high quality and teach alot and this book is no different. I like that he is now looking at teaching beginner singers and hope that he will develop a new course in that area very soon.In the mean-time this book has a lot to offer anyone interested in vocal science and using their singing voice authentically.

As a singing teacher I would recommend this book. John Henny explains the science of singing in a way that is easy to understand. There are various exercises to help singers achieve their goals along with explanations about why they will help. Definitely worth reading if you are serious about improving and understanding your voice.

Very good. The author's story very similar to mine. Lots of good tips and makes you think of pitch in a way that made far more sense to me then anything I have read before. Very encouraging and prompt results!

Good for learning how to sing or improve your singing

This book made me start to understand the human voice a lot better and good exercises can I sing no but can I now practice and start to figure my own voice out yes

Full disclosure, I have studied with John, a bit, and am only 1/3rd of the way into the book, but... I don't think I'm particularly biased, as I plan on writing a similar book, soon, and it's decisively inconvenient for me that this book is already so good.It's probably the best book I've seen on singing for singers with little or no 'verified scholarly knowledge' about technique. We all hear that breathing is so important and 'don't drink milk before a performance' or whatever, but... this is not the same as deeply understanding what skilled commercial singing really breaks down to--what it is, and how it is best learned.Vocal training based on current vocal science and other related evidence-based learning principles is a whole different universe in terms of ability to solve vocal challenges, and do so as quickly and effectively as possible.Not that the book is all that technical. John writes with a lot of empathy, wit, and soul, but what he writes is also based on less-well-known, but current vocal science principles that are well-established in modern peer reviewed literature.I love this book so far. It's super affordable. Just get it.

I highly recommend this book to singers of all abilities but in particular to those just beginning their journey. Packed with practical, easy to understand information that is well supported by a wealth of material on the accompanying website. Too many books aimed at the beginning vocalist are either over complex, or so simple you wonder if the author ever sang a note in their life. This book is NOT one of those. Working through this book you will feel you have your own personal tutor carefully guiding you along your journey. While nothing replaces having vocal lessons with a qualified and experienced singing teacher - this book is the next best thing.

Such an amazing book! It was easy to understand and has helped my voice so much. No matter your skill level I highly recommend this book.

I have been a voice teacher for 15 years. This is the book and John Henny is the teacher that I wish I had when I first began studying the voice. He's very knowledgeable about how the voice works and what you need to do to make your voice work for you. And more importantly, he explains it in a way that makes sense. Not just use your support, relax your throat, place your sound etc. Read this book. Listen to his podcast, the intelligent vocalist. These two things alone will be a game changer. And on top of everything else he's a sweetheart of a man who really wants the best for his readers and listeners.
