Upgrade from a much older version is tricky
I had a much older version of FileMaker that I had never needed to upgrade. I only use it for a couple of databases for a home business inventory. When I finally had to upgrade my iMac to OS 10.15 (Catalina), I had to upgrade my FileMaker to enable it to continue to run. However, when I tried to do the upgrade, I got the message that my version was not eligible for upgrade. After calling Claris support, I learned that if I could find a FileMaker 16 or higher upgrade in the aftermarket, I could upgrade to that and from there to FileMaker Pro 19. I did and it worked and the two-step process saved me about $200 vs. buying the full new version. However, my databases, while I can use them, are a bit clunky. When I go to update a cell in the database, the contents disappear. I am able to update the data and it reappears after I'm done.

Avoid at all costs!!!!!!
Be warned!!! Unless you are totally certain you have an official hardcopy of your license key from either version 17 or 18, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS UPGRADE! I have a legitimate copy of version 17, but Claris tells me my license from 17 is invalid. What's worse, unless you purchased directly from Claris, they have no way to find your number and when you click About->Info, the program only gives you the very beginning and the very last set of digits to your license. Claris has no backdoor or other method to find your legitimate key so, like many who have written here, despite being a bona fide owner of an appropriate prior version, I am SOL and out the $200.Note: In order for the upgrade to work you must have a key from version 17 or 18. There is no way to obtain it from your current program, nor does the publisher have any way of identifying your key for you. Even if you copied and pasted the key when you installed your original version (as I did) it will very likely not work.

Need a previous version to get a serial number
I have used File Maker for many years. I have written a File Maker version to manage our home Budget. The version I bought did not mention he need for a previous version to ue it's serial number. Can't return the software. Bummer. I apparently just out $200. FileMaker provided me with a option to buy another copy from them that will use the serial number that came the version I bought from Amazon, buy that's not an answer because its another $200-300 dollars. GuessI'll have to eat the one I bought from Amazon.

Very Smooth Process!
I wish there where a download link for this program like the other library Apps, but that a was a smooth experience. Just copy the link and paste, activate using my Filemaker 18 license, and that's all!

Disappointed version
I just found out that in this version you cannot make a runtime or stand alone database anymore. Version 18 advanced was the last version you could do that with. I guess now you have to buy into there server or cloud or Claris connect add on. In order to build a application and use it or more than 1 device.

Did not work
My edition of Filemaker Pro was too old to accept the upgrade. We (my tech and I) have tried every way possible and this did not accept my previous license number. I am going to try to get a refund.

Version 19 Offers Great Benefits, but No So Great for Some (revised 24/07/2021)
FileMaker is an incredible piece of software. It empowers developers with visual tools and an internal programming language that makes it possible to not only create management systems for inventory, assets, contacts, events, transactions (mainly, invoices) and the like that are vital for businesses and organisations, but it also empowers hobbyists to create innovative applications useful for themselves and other individuals.Version 19 introduces add-ons, probably the major new feature, which may indicate a trend towards the modularisation of FileMaker to make life much easier for developers, which Claris, the owners of FileMaker, promote as "low code".Add-0ns are modules that can be inserted into your application. FileMaker provides nine such and two of the standouts are the highly functional calendar and Kanban (signboard with three process lanes). They're just a matter of drag-and-drop. This idea of ready-made modules will flourish in two ways: additional ones may be offered by FileMaker (for free as the current nine are free) and then there are those available for purchase at the Claris Marketplace, which range in price. The marketplace also gives every developer the opportunity to sell their wares there.JavaScript-like functions have been added which are great for enhancing web-bound applications. For a fee, Claris Cloud offers a means for deploying one's apps.Tailoring one's apps for deployment to the iPhone and iPad has been fine-tuned.For those hobbyists who create desktop applications destined for local hard-drives, version 19 may not be as big-ado as the previous version (18) with its offering of the powerful While function. But the add-ons are quite enticing. If you're on v17 or earlier, strongly consider upgrading as it's rumoured that v19 may be the last that may be bought outright (and also along the way to pick up the While function).FileMaker is a beautiful and powerful database-creation platform upon which one may create simple and complex systems to meet the needs of businesses and organisations. Though v19 is not the greatest upgrade for hobbyists who merely wish to create desktop apps for local hard-drives, nonetheless the build-up of features from past upgrades allows for surprising innovations to meet personal needs. In short, with version 19 Claris is readying FileMaker to meet the challenges of a competitive future. My wishlist for a future version:1. to automatically colour comments in the Specify Calculation dialog to delineate them from code and thus reduce the appearance of clutter;2. to modernise the Custom Function dialog in line with the Specify Calculation dialog, which had been modernised several versions ago;3. that, fingers crossed, Claris may not go ahead with the rumoured universalised subscription form of payment and allow hobbyists the choice to own version 20 as they have owned past versions.
