Slow pace but covers aspects other books skim
This book shows a post-beginner Java programmer how to write neat, efficient programs. The code samples can easily be reused in your own programs. Ironically I have used at least 3 of the chapters as the basis of programs as work. As a self-taught programmer it has increased my understanding of vectors, threads and coding style - all concepts that most other books skim over. This book is pretty lightweight but I believe less is more. The only downsides to this book are the unnecessary class methods descriptions and the fact that the hockey game works really poorly - being both slow and erratic!

just an entertaining book
Java After Hours is a very entertaining book. I'm a Java developer and this was a very light read for me.The book is very clear and well written. I like the parts where the author uses the Java5 ImageIO very much. That said I'd like to mention that you won't learn much Java5 from this book, appart from using generics the book hardly touches any Java5 features. There is quite a lot of (trivial) code in this book, a little to much for my taste.I'd recommend it to anyone who just wants to play with Java.
