Composing for Japanese Instruments (Eastman Studies in Music, 57)

A wonderful resource which I have used for several years
This is an excellent resource for most questions one would have about Japanese instruments. Just about everything is covered: Japanese scales, instrument range, fingering, performance techniques, notational considerations, special effects (like tremolos, multiphonic and idiomatic capabilities), and the like. Plenty of examples are given to clarify what the author is touching upon. Appendices include a list of works for Japanese instruments by Minoru Miki and by other composers. A glossary is included as well, and the translation is excellent! Be forewarned, however: unlike the hardcover edition, the audio CDs are not included--but the text includes online links.
