For beginners and beyond!!
I don't usually purchase quilting books since you can find so much online for free but the cover caught my attention because of the word 'basics' above a project that is anything but basic…must have some good stuff inside! Flipping through to the table of contents I was happy to see lessons with so much potential from a fancy nine-patch, stars, applique, paper piecing and curves....really, really need help with curves and Jo's tips have me excited! Reading through the book I can see how each lesson builds on the next. All projects can be made in so many different ways….love patterns that can easily be reduced to make baby quilts or table/bed runners and the smaller projects bigger!! I can see the ‘Tree of Paradise’ surrounded with a ‘Stream’ border or the ‘Pop Art Block’ into a whole quilt…or on the back of a jacket!!My main criteria to finally push 'add to cart' is ...will I make at least three projects? Well....I want to try them all...especially....well....I can’t pick just one!!Thanks for this kind of a book Jo…one that appeals to the beginner and beyond!!

Not for absolute beginners
This book has lovely design ideas - but as an absolute beginner, I found it did not tell me enough basics, in spite of the title. I needed to learn how to choose the batting, and exactly how to go about the process of 'quilting' - otherwise this is just about patchwork. And the projects were pretty substantial quilts.I went out and bought a different book which dealt with such things - and where the projects started with such things as coasters, table mats, so I could practice with a reasonable chance of success before I embarked on a pretty substantial quilt.

Fantastic book for someone starting out.
I have just recently become a “quilter” - thanks to this book. The title of the book perfectly describes the contents ! It is clearly written with lovely accompanying photographs. The projects are designed in such a way that you gradually develop your skills. I am currently working on the first quilt in the book and already have learned so much. Jo Avery gives exactly the right amount of information and the right level of projects to work your way through in such a way that you are suitably challenged but not overwhelmed !

Highly recommended for ALL.
Excellent book. I bought it so that I could join a Quilt Along group and I am so glad that I did! Unlike other 'beginners' books, it actually goes beyond the basics, with curved piecing, paper piecing etc. I would recommend this for ALL skill levels.

bello e originale
Ho acquistato il libro dopo aver visto un promo dell'editore. Contiene istruzioni ben spiegate per 'beginners' ma vanno bene per tutti per darsi una rinfrescata. I modelli proposti sono molto interessanti.

Good instructions
I started a quilt but was having difficulty, the book I was using was not for beginners. I am now nearly finished my first quilt thanks to this book.
