Salix ‘Hakuro-Nishiki, also known as Salix ‘Flamingo’ or Flamingo Willow, is a beautiful, showy variety of willow with striking, colourful foliage between spring and autumn. This gorgeous specimen has been trained into a standard (lollipop) tree, with multiple stems which have been woven into a pretty, twisted braid to form a main trunk. Sitting above the braided stem is a rounded ball of foliage, which emerges bright pink in spring and then gradually fades into a marbling of cream and green. Before the foliage falls in autumn, it changes once again to vibrant shades of orange. This low-maintenance plant is the ideal choice for adding height and structural interest to borders or patio containers, where it will put on a colourful display which changes through the seasons, with very little fuss at all.Grow Salix in a sunny or partially shaded position, in any well drained soil. To achieve the most colourful foliage, trim back all side branches by a third during July. You can trim Salix Hakuro-Nishiki plants through the year to keep them tidy, with fresh variegated growth.
