A must read for strategists
The path of loss confidence worldwide is worrisome. As trust is a virtuous circle, distrust is a vicious one.In his new book “Trust: Creating the Foundation for Entrepreneurship in Developing Countries”, Harvard professor Tarun Khanna reminds us that trust oxygenates, brightens our existence and facilitates all interactions, complex and worldly. And that for Adam Smith trust was the hidden engine of economic progress. That distrust, in contrast, imposes a huge cognitive burden, like the sand on the wheels of society, slowing things down, consuming energy and the will to live. It has an enervating effect on attempts to be creative to solve problems, cornering people in the known and tested, so as not to complicate. The worst thing is that, as we are all creatures of habits, we get used to living with it.In his new book Khanna addresses the issue of trust, studied by legions of academics, from the novel point of view of the design of a creative strategy that generates virtuous circles of trust, without which no enterprise can achieve an impact on society at big scale. And avoid triggering vicious circles of mistrust capable of tearing down valuable companies or institutions that took years to build.Khanna's book includes many real cases of strategies based on trusted networks in developing countries. In addition to being very interesting, the text is very enjoyable to read thanks to its vivid descriptions of the contexts where the ventures occur and the trust problems they face.According to Khanna's book, building a successful strategy is not very different from building a trust network. Virtuous circles of trust require an internal and externally coherent strategy, which takes trust into account in all its many decisions, its demands a holistic approach where everything must fit. Destroying the reputation is much easier, the vicious circles of distrust can be caught with only a decision that does not fit.

Secrets to building crazy rich asian businesses
A must read for building scalable businesses, like Alibaba, in emerging markets by creating conditions to create. A whole host of capabilities to create trust networks between suppliers, customers and the platforms. Businesses who are doing this at scale dominate their segments and markets. Brilliant and timely book from Professor Tarun Khanna.

Great first chapter but more examples than actual theories
If you are an entrepreneur in a developing country, the first chapter of the book that prof. Khana talks about the Trust is useful for you. The rest of the book doesn't add much to your knowledge. The rest of the book is just case study after case study about bridging the gap without going deep into the details of how they manage to overcome government regulations. For examples talks about Alibaba and and eBay without talking about how Alibaba managed to get its permit to for Alipay and eBay was stalled by Chinese authorities. This book is the text book example of professors trying to write about business without being involved in one.Bottom line: if you would like to know more about certain companies in the developing countries read this book. However, if you are already an entrepreneur or wishing to expand your knowledge on how to do a business in a developing world, this book will not be much of help. Seek that knowledge somewhere els.

Well written, insightful, and a must read for entrepreneurs
I read Prof Khanna's book from cover to cover, at one sitting. I was unable to put it down as the concepts devised, the stories shared and the reflections noted were both fascinating and provided true learning. Trust is so critical to business; its surprising that it took this book to make it so clear to me how its the foundation for all business and how the lack of it creates challenges that are often insurmountable. Entrepreneurs big and small will benefit from this handbook on trust, specially as its such a good read.
