B + W Circular Polarizer Kaesemann - Xtra Slim Mount (XS-PRO), HTC, 16 Layers Multi-Resistant and Nano Coating, Photography Filter, 49 mm

Note - I have ordered this item on Amazon in the past with no issues and the filter itself is terrific. Amazon initially prevented me from posting this review even though it fully complies with their terms... Am trying again.The filter that I received, from what turned out to be a third-party seller (fulfilled by Amazon), was a counterfeit. I use this filter on multiple lenses and was able to compare - the fake one has white/silver text and in a different font than the yellow/gold on the original, is significantly lighter, and turns much less smoothly than the original. If you search online, there are articles of fake B+W products being sold, and it seems some are indeed showing up when ordering via Amazon.

I got fake one. It was lucky to find out. If I didnt read reviews before I purchase I might be fooled. Be aware. Also the box looks very cheap and fake made in China. No authentication sealing, not in the outer box or inner case. I'm very disappointed. I'm returning it back and reorder one more time hoping they send me genuine B+W this time.

Owning many BW filters, it took me all of 3 seconds of opening the box to see this was a counterfeit filter. I reported it to Amazon but everyone should be warned of the extreme high risk of buying BW filters here now. It's such a bad knock off, they didn't even bother to fake the low-profile nature of it. Honestly, this is some lazy counterfeit work here. White lettering, not well placed. I'm sure at the Local 211 Countefeiters Guild, this kind of sloppy work would get them kicked out. TLDR: EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN BUYING ANY BW FILTERS HERE.

Prior to buying this filter, I saw a few reviews on here saying they received a knockoff filter with poor performance. "No problem," I thought, and decided to buy used from a reputable seller on here, hoping to avoid the problem. But alas, I didn't. I somehow still ended up with a fake B+W filter.I got around to doing some tests (see the attached image) and you can see what I mean. My Tiffen polarizing filter performs great, blocking out the computer screens as expected. But when I put on the knockoff B+W filter, I see a HUGE drop in exposure. I didn't calculate exactly, but it seems like it darkens the image by 4-5 stops. And when I raised the exposure to match my Tiffen filter, I saw a very noticeable blue/purple color shift, which is most evident in the bottom left corner of the frame (where a daylight balanced LED is shining through the glass table).HOW TO TELL IF YOU'VE RECEIVED A KNOCKOFF FILTER:-The filter significantly lowers your exposure and/or adds an ugly color shift to your image (this is the most surefire way to determine if you have a fake)-The filter is lightweight (the real one is supposed to be brass, which is heavier than a typical cheap filter)-The filter has white printing on the front ring (the B&H product listing shows this filter with gold text, so I believe the real filter has gold text instead of white)Search for "B+W fake filter" online and you'll find an article on The-Digital-Picture which has more info on this. It says "In general, photographs of boxes and the text on the filter will not confirm a legitimate B+W product" so the most surefire way to determine if you have a fake filter is to test it on your camera like I did.My recommendation is to buy this filter from a reputable source like B&H until Amazon can get it together and remove the fake listings/sellers from this product page. Or you can get it here and risk having to return it. Just be cautious!

Arrived on time, in good condition and appropriately packaged.Immediately struck by the quality of the construction. It felt well made and sturdy. Glass was pristine.As with a previous reviewer I have experienced a yellow colouration when using another brand of circular polarizer, Hoya Super HMC, so much so I had given up on using circular polarizers. Having had good experience with other B+W filters I decided to give this one a try. Tested the filter on a sunny day to enhance clouds/skies and also to remove reflections in water. The filter rotated smoothly with a suitable amount of resistance. I am pleased with the resulting images. No problem with unusual or overly dramatic colours and the filter successfully removed reflections in water.B+W filters are expensive, particularly in Canada, but given the quality of the construction and performance I think they are worth it.

have been having issues find a usable cpl for my sony16-35 fe f4 on my sony a7rIIbeen through tiffen premium, super dull color and strange yellowish hue. Hoya hrt, combo cpl/uv that gave super heavy vignetting and dull colors, finally found the B+W 72mm XS-Pro HTC Kaesemann that is amazing!! fantastic clarity, beautiful color representation, great glare cut and no vignetting what so ever!!! not cheap but when you have a great camera and a fantastic lens and you put a crappy filter on it you make the whole thing a crappy combo. your images are never better than the glass you use!

I could hardly believe it when I held this top class filter up to the light that there were smear marks covering virtually the whole of the rear surface of the front glass(see pictures). I don't know how these marks will affect image quality, but it is of course impossible to clean these marks off as they are on the inside surface of the polarising filter. I requested a return and a replacement, but when it arrived the replacement was equally disappointing. Just like with the first filter, the rear of the front glass was covered in marks, only this time it was scratches instead of smear marks(see pictures). Again, I am not sure how these marks will affect image quality but from a company that boasts about flawless surfaces on its filters this is surely unacceptable. In all other respects these filters are great, solidly built etc but who wants their filters to be covered in smear marks and scratches. The replacement filter was returned for a refund.

► Vorbemerkung:Für meine Macro-Kombi bestehend aus Sony Alpha 7R II und SEL90M28G Objektiv mit 62 mm Filtergewinde benötigte ich einen POL-Filter, um störende Reflexionen z.B. von Glasplatten etc. zu minimieren. Doch wenn man schon eine HighEnd-Kombi nutzt, wäre es Frevel, einen Billigfilter zu nutzen. Deshalb fiel meine Wahl auf ein Produkt „Made in Germany“ von B+W (Schneider-Kreuznach) aus der F-Pro Serie.► Verpackung und Lieferumfang:Der Filter wird, wie bei den meisten Wettbewerbsprodukten auch, in einer Kunststoffbox geliefert. Diese ist allerdings nicht so spröde, sondern besteht aus einem weicheren, flexibleren Material und sollte auch beim Transport im Rucksack keinerlei Schaden nehmen. Die Kunststoffbox selbst ist von einem nicht versiegelten blauen Umkarton umgeben. Dieser ist mit einem individuellen QR-Code-Sticker versehen, welchen man mit einem Smartphone scannen und somit die Echtheit des Produkts verifizieren kann.► Erster Eindruck und Verarbeitungsqualität:Ich habe schon viele Filter besessen, günstige und mittelpreisige. Der B+W Filter ist mein bislang teuerster Filter und allein die solide und gut designte Fassung ist eine Klasse für sich. Der gerändelte Ring zum Verschrauben mit dem Filtergewinde ist im Durchmesser etwas größer gehalten als der Ring zum Einstellen der Polarisation. Bei meinen bisherigen Filtern waren die Durchmesser immer gleich, weswegen es häufig Probleme beim Entfernen der Filter gab.Auch war der Filter absolut frei von Staub oder Fingerabdrücken. Man sollte meinen, dies sei eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Aber gerade bei Hoya-Filtern hatte ich schon oft verschmutzte Filter in der Verpackung vorgefunden.► Funktion und optische Qualität:Wer sich einen POL-Filter kauft, weiß in der Regel wozu dieser da ist und was er damit machen will. Dennoch möchte ich für Neulinge einige wenige Worte darüber verlieren.Mittels eines Polfilters kann man störende Lichtreflexe entfernen oder zumindest minimieren. Solche Lichtreflexe findet man häufig auf spiegelnden Gewässern, Autolackierungen oder Glasscheiben. Gleichzeitig kann man bei Landschaftaufnahmen die Farbsättigung erhöhen und erhält kontraststärkere Aufnahmen. So wird z.B. das Himmelsblau entsprechend verstärkt.Was viele Anwender aber nicht wissen ist, dass die Wirkung eines Pol Filters vom Aufnahmewinkel der Kamera zur Motivoberfläche abhängig ist. Der optimale Aufnahmewinkel zu spiegelnden Flächen liegt bei ca. 35°. Bei Landschaftsaufnahmen erreicht man hingegen eine maximale Wirkung bei einem Aufnahmewinkel von ca. 90° zur Sonne. Bei trübem Wetter hat ein Pol-Filter allerdings so gut wie gar keine Wirkung. Auch ist es nicht möglich, Spiegelungen metallischer Gegenstände zu verringern.Doch zurück zum eigentlichen Produkt dieser Rezension. Die High-Transmission Filter von B+W sind zwar seitens ihrer optischen Qualitäten absolute Spitzenprodukte, dennoch wird ein gewisser Anteil des Lichts zurückgehalten, weswegen man von einem Filterfaktor von 2-3 spricht. Dies entspricht einem Verlust von ca. 1 – 1,5 Blendenstufen. In meinem Falle bemerke ich bei Macroaufnahmen dann auch gelegentlich, dass für die automatische Fokussierung nicht genügend Licht zur Verfügung steht. Hier empfiehlt es sich, den Filter erst einmal auf maximale Durchlässigkeit zu drehen, zu fokussieren und erst wenn der Fokuspunkt gesetzt ist, den Filter auf maximale Wirkung zu verdrehen und dann abzudrücken.Die A7R II mit ihren 42 Megapixeln ohne Tiefpassfilter legt jede optische Schwäche eines Objektivsystems gnadenlos offen. Dennoch konnte ich keinerlei negative optische Effekte feststellen. Der Filter minimiert unerwünschte Reflexionen, nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Dafür habe ich ihn gekauft und er macht was ich von ihm erwartet habe.Neben den optischen Qualitäten gibt es einen weiteren Grund für den hohen Preis dieses Filters. Und das betrifft die Verkittungstechnik. Viele preisgünstige oder auch mittelpreisige Filter sind bereits nach einer gewissen Zeit nicht mehr verwendbar, weil sich die Polarisationsfolie vom Deckglas löst. B+W Filter sollen über eine besonders robuste Verkittung verfügen.► Unterschied zwischen F-Pro und XS-Pro FassungenDer Unterschied liegt in der Bauhöhe der Fassungen (Dicke) und der damit verbundenen Vignettierung. Für Weitwinkelobjektive sollte man also auf jeden Fall XS-Pro Fassungen verwenden um eine unerwünschte Vignettierung zu vermeiden. In meinem Falle (90 mm Brennweite) spielt das aber keine Rolle und so hat die F-Pro Fassung den Vorteil, dass der (dickere) Drehring so besser zu bedienen ist.► Fazit:Wer auf kompromisslose Qualität achtet und mit HighEnd-Equipment fotografiert, sollte die maximalen Abbildungsleistungen nicht durch falsche Sparsamkeit in Frage stellen. Die B+W Filter genießen unter Fotoprofis nicht umsonst einen exzellenten Ruf.
