Chrysler Slant Six Engines: How to Rebuild and Modify

I just wish it could have had more pages - 225 would be a good number!
I ordered this book in anticipation of needing to give my 225 a complete overhaul, and it's delivered. There's already several greasy fingerprints on its pages.Doug Dutra has been "the" guru for the Chrysler Slant Six, and I'm glad to have a copy of this book while taking apart and inspecting my engine. This book covers what you need to know to take apart, inspect, and put back together any Chrysler Slant Six, assuming you've got tools from the local Harbor Freight or NAPA instead of the Kelsey-Hayes tools that a dealership service manual assumes you might have (and which even your average Dodge dealership probably threw away years ago). Doctor Dodge also packs this book with a lot of notes on common problems to look for as you take the engine apart, and notes where a little bit of grinding or drilling in a well-chosen spot can help oil flow, cooling, or other touches that will boost your engine's longevity or power with no more cost than a little of your time. The pictures are clear and easily show you what's going on - with one or two exceptions for things that don't photograph well (the little numbers stamped into the connecting rods come to mind) but are going to be clear when you have a real engine in front of you.If there's one problem with this book, it's that Cartech held this book to only 144 pages (seriously, Cartech - a 144 is a Ford engine!). Doug could probably fill ten times that page count with what he knows about slant six performance - he's done everything from making his own patterns to cast reproductions of long-unavailable factory performance parts to reworking an aluminum slant six from an open deck engine block to a closed deck. But even bumping the page count up to match one of the slant six engine sizes (take your pick - even 170 pages would be nice if 198 or 225 weren't an option) would have let Doug get some information in print about cylinder head porting, cam selection, and other ways to get more power out of these motors. The book does give you some power secrets - for example, he notes that there's points on the cylinder head that need to be machined to fit higher lift camshafts. And he covers such tricks as mixing and matching connecting rods and cranks from different applications, including the method Doug pioneered of putting Chrysler 2.2 pistons in a slant six. But there's not as much about performance in here as the basics of how to overhaul the engine. If you have a Chrysler slant six and it needs a refresh, buy this book. Buy it before you pull the engine out. Having a copy of it when I was taking the engine out would probably have saved me a couple hours of unnecessary work.

Nice book
Been wanting this for a long time. Color pictures was a pleasant surprise. Seller could have shipped this better though. Corner took a shot. Why not a box? Otherwise cool. - one star for shipping container choice.

Covers The Basics - a must have book for slant-6 owners
Written by famed Slant-6 guru Doug Dutra with content by other notables, all the basics of engine configuration & identification, disassembly, inspection, rebuild, (slight) modification, assembly, and tuning are covered. Whether you've rebuilt many; or if this is your first outing with a slant-6 engine, this is the go-to resource. Tidbits of cool & valuable factoids are sprinkled throughout the book, as one would expect from this author. Stroke changes are mentioned in overview fashion; but not in detail. The installation of a supercharger is however very detailed, albeit I can't see that being a popular direction for all but a few. Nonetheless, if you're headed down this path, the step-by-step directions will be invaluable. That said, if you are looking for high-performance street or track modifications and information, this isn't the book. Not that that's a drawback, this is the only book of its kind for this engine and is very informative. Perhaps with enough "encouragement" however, a performance-focused Volume-2 book could be written for those yearning to get more horsepower and torque from their inliners ;)

A GO TO book/ manual which is through and nicely written- and rammed with info.
Like the simplicity, and the information - laid out in a concise and dependable way . I will be looking at this periodically , when ever I have an issue or up grade to the Dodge Town wagon with a slant 6 which we have recently imported. Best I have come across so far.
